Women in military

I was watching this parade a while back on Aug 14th i think, and they had processions of the military…and then there was this procession of women also…it may have been the police force, but I was under the impression that it was the military since they showed the shot of the women along with military men. I was wondering if women are allowed to work in the military, even if its like behind scenes doing research or computer work and planning and the likes…?

If not…do you guys think women ought to be allowed to come into the military – whether to fight or to do “behind the scene” work. After all, Pakistani women have shown a dedication and excellent performance in careers from arts to politics.

Women are in Medical core and some behind the scene work (computer related) is done by women in Pakistan Air Force. (Please correct me if i am wrong)

PyariC has been welcome here a lot longer than you have! Start showing some respect!

There is one women general in the Pak Army, I tink she's a Maj.General. Her name slips me at this moment. She is in the Med corps I think.

I think there are 2 regiments of women reserve soldiers in the Pakistan army.

All I know is that until he complained about it and got his assignment changed, one of my relatives in the PA was assigned to command a regiment consisting entirely of women soldiers.

There are 2 ways in which an officer in the Pakistan army can be virtually assured of the end of his career. One is to be promoted to the rank of full Colonel, in which case you will be behind a desk for the rest of your career.

The other is to be condemned to command a women's regiment, in which case you are guaranteed to be overlooked for all future promotions.

ZII, this reaction, although somewhat cruelly stated (its like a laanat actually), doesn't surprise me. But, I would like for you to expand on this. Dont worry about other guppies and their reactions. I'm really interested in knowing why it was that you wish so ill on me for implying that women would do a good job in the military. Keep in mind that in the military, you can serve a combative role and a non-combative one. I'm not saying that women should be in the field fighting. That's not becuz women can't fight as well, but becuz of the sexual tension that interferes in the field. But I think that if women become more active in the planning of battles, etc, it wont be a bad thing necessarily, especially if she's a brilliant tactician.

So tell me of your opinions. By the way, welcome to gupshup POL section!

PCG,

There is actually an article in today's times covering this subject about a woman who tried out day in the army and she was shocked at the ugliness of the conditions. She found it very difficult to share a small space in a trench with male soldiers. I'll post a link to the full article.

You might find this an interesting read though this deals with serving in the frontlines themselves:

Confessions of a Frontline woman

ZII, its that sometimes you dont agree with some one. Although there are many issues like this in which my point of view is very different from PCG, but still that does not mean that we should resort to name calling. This is a discussion forum, where every one has the rights to express their point of view. Nothing to be personal about.

I´m not against women or anybody else beeing in the army !
But you have in earlier post expressed that Pakistan should abandon Kashmir and Kashmiris. I dont find such an attitude to be in favour of Pakistan or neither in the interest of Pakistani Army. Therefore I stated that we dont need people like you in the Pak-army.
Pakistan was not created for some specific "nationality" but for all the muslims of the Southasian continent.
You dont agree with that. I dont see any difference between you and the indian stance.

lol, so then you ought to have put that comment in that post of the kashmiris!

I thought that obviously since ur posting the laanat here, you’ve got something ag/my opinion on women in the military.

Waise, most pakistanis dont agree with my stance on kashmir. Kashmir is a murky issue and I’m just beginning to learn more about it. When I made that statement, I really didn’t know the reason why we’re there. I thought it was to actually help muslims. In reality, its all about land. And in that sense, if Kashmir had been delineated to Pakistan, then it belongs to us, regardless of what the hindu ruler handing kashmir over to India thought was right.

But for those people who are crying out about their kashmiri brothers and sisters suffering in Kashmir, I would still maintain that if that’s the only reason why Pakistani military is there, then they ought to just get out, becuz 1. we dont have a uniform policy for kashmir. 2. despite a good number of kashmiris wishing to be part of Pakistan, many more kashmirirs just want independence and riddance from both Pakistan and India 3. We’ve got one too many internal problems and the money you’re spending on Kashmir could be spent strenthening Pakistan.

But I still have some reservations about my opinion. One side of me feels right now that we shoud haul arse in Kashmir, and the other thinks that it would be wiser to just pull out, or at least weaken our hold on it. I mean, if its possible for the govt to continue their battle in Kashmir, and improve internal conditions at the same time by erasing corruption, then lets continue in kashmir…but perhaps that isn’t possible.

2ndly, yes Pakistan was made for Indian muslims. But its been 50 years. Those muslims who wished to join Pakistan did. And those who wish it now are doing it. But the muslims in India, majority wise, do not wish to become Pakistanis. I feel that its not really that big of a deal, cuz you do need representatives of Islam in a majorly non-muslim land to spread the Word there. Many Kashmiri muslims do wish to be part of Pakistan as was originally planned. So perhaps we should continue our fighting there. But then we ought to just get it back once and for all…lets stop wasting time there. I think if war breaks out now, it will be a great opportunity to end the whole disputed territory deal and make Kashmir our own! so you see ZII, I’ve got the betterment of Pakistan in my mind when I try to form opinions on Kashmir.

going BACK to the topic, I agree though, women should definitely not be in the fighting field...its pretty harsh there and the sexual tension that arises is too much a problem. Can you imagine a man and a woman sharing a tank for 8 hours straight? And nothing to do...

but why not let them do a little bit of planning, weapon developement, etc? I hope more women get involved in that aspect of the military.
