Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

Egyptians are horrified by the news that women have been assaulted by hordes of young men in the centre of the capital, Cairo.

Blogs broke the story that has scandalised Egyptians (Picture: misrdigital.com)
The incidents were first reported online by Egyptian bloggers, some of whom saw large number of men harassing the women and ripping off their clothes.

It all happened over the Eid al-Fitr period starting on 23 October, as thousands of young men thronged the streets of central Cairo to celebrate the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

One blogger who took pictures of what happened dubbed the incidents “sexual voracity down town”.

According to the bloggers, the attackers targeted veiled as well as unveiled women who happened to be on their own.

The state media ignored the incidents, but ordinary Egyptians where shocked when they heard for the first time eyewitness accounts broadcast on the private television channel Dream.

Women chased

“We saw one girl being chased by a man, her blouse torn off, she ran inside a restaurant,” one eyewitness reported.

We took the girl inside and locked the door. There were four or five of us. But there were hundreds of young men outside trying to break down the door

Cairo shop owner

"Seconds later young boys were shouting that there was another one by the Miami cinema. We went there and saw another girl surrounded by a crowd trying to assault her. She managed to run inside a nearby building.

“A third girl jumped into a cab as she was being chased. But the taxi couldn’t move because of the crowd. Then they tried to pull the driver out of the car then the girl herself,” the witness told Dream TV.

One eyewitness was too embarrassed to recount what he saw: “There were youths harassing the young women. What a shame! I really can not say any more about it.”

Social malaise

One blogger wrote that as the police failed to protect the women, shop keepers had to intervene.

A shop owner described to the TV station what happened: “We took the girl inside and locked the door. There were four or five of us. But there were hundreds of young men outside trying to break down the door.”

The bloggers blamed the incidents on widespread sexual frustration among Egypt’s youths.

Most of them cannot afford to get married and premarital sex is strictly forbidden.

One commentator said that this was evidence of the breakdown of law and order in Egypt.

Another said the state deployed the police only to suppress political dissent but could not care less about the welfare of its own citizens.

It is quite sad that these groups of young muslim men assulted the girls. Still wondering why would some one do that? and who is to blame for all this ???

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

Unbelievable and disgusting.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

idiots, this reminds me of the pathetic behavior in NYC during puerto rican day parade a few years back ( i think that was the occasion)

but whoa, what a nice way to end ramadan and thank god for his blessings. hey when they say shaitan is released after eid, I guess this time he decided to go to egypt in force...

not close to being as bad, but ask women what they deal with in bazaars and all especially at chand raat, no matter what they are wearing.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

Truly pathetic...

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

Apprently cairo isnt the only place where it happens, if you read the blog it happens there all the time.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

Cairo is not the only place where it happens as ‘young mob’ assaulting women? Where else have you heard about it? You also said “it happens there all the time”, but still it is disgusting.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

goes to show that Islam has become a cultural entity now… the cultural Islam … when you take spirit/understanding out of religion it becomes “cultural”.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

This one person can talk about two incidents

Ragab Al-Khawaga Oct 31st, 2006 at 5:27 pm I have seen this kind of behavior at mouleds. Young women get harrassed, gropped the clothes pulled. I saw it at Sayeda Zeinab once. The young women was with her husband or fiance, he had to get his belt off and whip their way out of the crowd, the police interviened though and help him with they crowd control wooden stick. I have actually been part of another episode at the tanta mouled. I was with my girlfriend and another male friend. We were trying to go through a crowd and some young men started to try groping her I had to push them back really hard and we stormed out. This the reuslt of kabt dur to the impossibility for young men to marry sometimes before 40 and the sense of lawlessness at mouleds. I ahvent seen what went one in Cairo bu think I have an idea of what your talking about.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

Whats even worse is that the govt is denying anything ever happened!

It’s unbelievable what Rosa al-Youssef is doing these days. The daily paper, which is regarded as close to Gamal Mubarak’s NDP Policies’ Secretariat, is launching a crusade against journalist/blogger and friend [Wael Abbas](http://misrdigital.blogspirit.com/) for helping to expose the [downtown Cairo molestation fiesta during Eid.](http://arabist.net/arabawy/2006/10/26/downtowns-sex-predators/)

The horrific incidents went unreported by the local media, except for Al-Masry Al-Youm which published an article about it yesterday based on the bloggers’ testimonies. MP Mustafa Bakri has submitted questions to the government today about the incidents, while the Interior Ministry is claiming nothing happened, as always.
Karam Gabr, the paper’s editor is claiming Wael is fabricating the incidents using his “sick fantasies”, and started the usual overdose of flag-waving with accusations of “defaming Egypt’s image” BS.
Gabr is the same guy who back in the summer was claiming that Mohamed Sharqawi was also fabricating stories about his torture and sexual abuse.
Shame on you Rosa! And as for you Gabr, your seat in President Gamal Mubarak’s Ministry of Truth is surely waiting…

Blogs are not the most reliable of sources.

LOL

They will abstain from premartial sex because it is strictly forbidden but wont have a problem harassing a women in the streets??? What a joke!

I'm sorry but this sounds like a hoax or it's way exaggerated.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

these guys are a product of culture AND religion.. don't forget they still have the headquarters of fatwas in their midst.

It's no secret that this particular version of Islam has failed miserably. Time for a serious Reform movement.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

There are pictures on different blogs showing what happened and BBC has covered this as well. Nobody will make a big deal out of nothing.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

Go to the blogs and actually look at the pics then come back and talk. :rotfl:

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

correct..and whether cultural aspects water the religion down or make it something stricter, more controlling, as is done by some..both can only lead to trouble.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

captain to add to that, in certain other parts of th world where the guys have to pay large sums as dowry to teh girl's father, many guys cant get married and then the whole incidence of gay ness and baccha screwing is high there. Its so bad that there is a widely known term for it in their own culture, "ashna".. but the same ppl also claim to be defenders of the faith.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

give these guys some porn and lotion.

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

Is that true? That's seriously sick and perverted if it's true. Makes me cringe, I was in that exact place 7 months ago.....

When I went to Cairo I have to admit that The men in Cairo were perverted, they hassle you and shout things, they all have burri nazarien.....I can believe that story...

Re: Women have been assaulted by young men in the centre of the Cairo.

this is just wonderful. shame on these men.

for that matter, all these virgin women, must be really very frustrated as well, they should also chase men then.

the whole picture is wrong, the Muslim youth - women and men - have forgotten that there is a balance between self-dignity and passion. that there are mannerisms that go with courtship in Islam. that the respect for the other gender is a precedent for allowing a trustworthy relationship to form.

this is a social failure, and a spirtual rape of the minds of men and women in today's Muslim society to blame it on their sexuality.

yes, may be some are diseased and have a psychological addiction or lack of self control,

but then there is media propaganda to make "Muslim" societies look worse off, and there is also a sense of confused identity.

this is too shamefull. that women cannot walk their country's streets with a sense of security and self-composure.
