Experiment proves women really are better at multitasking
The age-old saying that ‘women are better at multitasking than men’ is scientific fact, it seems.
When switching between several tasks, a woman’s performance speed falls by 70 per cent, compared with nearly 80 per cent for men.
In one experiment, both sexes were pitted against each other and had just eight minutes to finish three jobs.
Thrown into the mix was a phone call where they had to answer general knowledge questions.
It soon emerged women could balance it all and excelled at one job in particular – finding keys.
Prof Keith Laws, from the University of Hertfordshire, said: ‘This one significant advantage for women on the key search task suggests they may be superior at tasks requiring planning.’
Other challenges participants tackled included finding restaurants on a map, solving simple maths questions and identifying shapes as fast as possible.
The study by three British universities aimed to explore the differences between men and women that have developed in our evolutionary past.
It is hoped the results will explain why men suffer from more attention deficit disorders than women.
Dr Gijsbert Stoet, from the University of Glasgow, added: ‘We need to provide explanations as to precisely why women appear to be better multitaskers.’
