Women and their involvement in religious activities

SO why is it that in our culture you see that it is mainly womenfolk who organize and attend dars and majaalis and halaqas and Quran khwanis and milaads, etc.? I hardly see men involved in any activities other than their fardh namaazein, maybe a few odd lectures at the mosques or community centers, and of course helping their wives clean up all the post-milaad mess :D.

So it is because women have more time, or is it because they are by virtue more religious, or is there more power in their duas and recitations or is it just another alibi for socializing?

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

I don't think it's an accurate observation.

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

Really? I have never seen men at Quran Khwanis etc... such a very few handful of mosque-level events.

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

Depends. I've seen guys organize dars and religious seminars. But among our social circle, it is usually the women arranging Quran Khwanis, etc.

Based on my observations, I've seen more women than men take the time out to read Quran and do zikr/tasbeeh on a regular basis. I know with the examples of Quran Khwani and Milad, you're referring to social events....but with even something on a more individual/smaller scale such as with reading Quran regularly and tasbeeh....it's mostly women in my experience. Maybe some individuals prefer to learn about Quran through lectures and recordings.

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

I agree, and I wanted to add that to my original post as well.

Peace Sister Niksik

(Longtime no see ... Hope you are well)

I see a variety of patterns and if I look at my earlier life yes that did seem to be the case ... However not now ... First of all we need to draw a distinction between community types, and family types, there are the families where women dominate and their husbands are labourers, shop owners, etc ... Their husbands will be more involved in mosque activities while they will be organising the home ones ... But this is generally among the older generation ... Let's call them the aunties ... Among the younger and more academic families then this pattern is more shared between both genders ... It depends on location and what is generally available in the area too ...

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

Sometimes I've wondered if maybe it's not considered "cool" for the guys. For example, with girls...as young as teenagers....if they read Quran and do tasbeeh....it's not made fun of....even her peers might not make fun of her. But for teenaged guys or even those in their twenties......if they do more than the 5 prayers.....such regularly ghar main Quran aur tasbeeh parhna.....what reaction would he receive from his male peers or even men within the family (father, uncles, etc)? It's something to think about. Would he be more teased than a female counterpart? Expected to get out of the house and be more active outdoors?

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

Qur'an Khwanis take place here pretty much only when someone passes away and occasionally when people move into a new house. In terms of seeing attendance at these events, I don't really see what goes on on the women's side as in how many they are and all. But if there are such events, I know they are attended by both men and women.

Otherwise, sometimes women hold their own tafseer or dars programs, but for every one that I know of organized and run by women, there are several done by the men at the masajid.

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

Women have more time and its also a good way to socialize.

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

^This. Women have more time in hand to do all these activities.

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

Guys do go with tableegi jamats & all that, dont they? .......

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

I dont think so women have more time as compared to men ...... they work all day long in the house unlike some guys who become couch potatoes after coming to home from work .....

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

Assalam u alaikum..

you might have been observed this thing...but in my neighbourhood men including my father participate in neighbour quran khuwani...women have no arrangement or such invitation...well both playing Alhamdulilah good role...may Allah make us among those who learn teach n convey quran n sunnah Ameen

Re: Women and their involvement in religious activities

Generally speaking, i have observed that women are more active in spreading deen and attaining knowledge more as compare to fellas in general. Not sure if my claim is true or not..but i do know that this is what i have seen from masajids here in general.
As for women organizing these religious activities i see them more active here. For those who go to ISNA, ICNA as well as local masajids in jummah and ramadan.. ya can see first hand women are actively involved in bake sale, food sale etc. So
