I am assuming three things here:
- Biological mother is unable to carry a baby herself due to medical reasons (and not due to vanity reasons).
- India is just used as an example, but this surrogacy can be from any country of the world (Mexico, South America, Europe etc).
- Risk from the IVF procedure is brought down to a very low level.
Its actually a tough one. People offer their bodies for all kinds of weird stuff - medical experiments, organ donation for money, testing of new medicines. IVF is no different. There is some risk, but with time and experience, this risk is low. If this way, somehow, a couple who is unable to have their own kids, is able to have a kid of their own (father's sperm, mother's egg); and at the same time, a poor woman from another country is able to earn more money than she can earn in a life-time, without sacrificing her dignity, who are we to complain. In a way it sounds win-win.
From an Islamic point of view, this all could be very dicey, and I'd be surprised if surrogate motherhood is permitted in Islam (I have not researched it), but for non-muslims, purely from a human stand point, I don't see them getting too bothered by it.
Practically one would assume that it is. A Demand is there and so the market should rise up and meet up with a suply. On the surface it looks like a win win situation as both the paries benefit.
But why is it that a lot of countries , its illegal to buy and sell human body parts(except for medical school use)
Why is it illegal for prostitutes to sell their bodies, when the same concept of exchange is taking place?
Why is it that third world countries are becoming the international shopper's paradise for not only buying human body parts but now wombs too.Its not like the throne is waiting to be passed down to the child from a long lineage of kings, and it is very necessary.
WHere does it all stop, at what point?Its not like those women are a helping aunt or friend who agrees to be a surrogate.If money wasnt involved, would they have sold their wombs like that, I wouldnt count on that.
