The Mufti has seemed to have lost sight of the real problem, in his haste to counter people like Amina Wadud.
I think people like Hamza Yusef get it...and that's the real plight of modern life with respect to our faith is that we're not meant to be automatons, or mere economic units of activity. We're people...meant to live a life of devotion. The real trouble starts with men, who spend more time at work than looking after the family...under the rubric of "providing". How much do you need to provide? Yes, there is a flip side to better social organization...and no, free markets are not inherently un-Islamic (I wish some of our religious ideologues who were brought up during the cold war would change their tune...the old anti-capitalist rhetoric they lifted from the Soviets is getting old).
In any case, this has nothing to do with women working...it has everything to do with the compulsion of either men or women to put in 9-5, 5 to 6 day weeks for some...abstract organization. There was a time when people worked for themselves and their family...if they didn't...they were slaves.
