Kuwait’s Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of a woman charged for setting on fire a tent that killed 57 women and children in 2009, reported Agence-France Presse.
Nasra Yussef Mohammed Al Enzi will become the first local woman to be executed in Kuwait by hanging, the only form of capital punishment in the kingdom, unless her sentence is commuted to life by the emir.
Ms. Al Enzi was arrested a day after the fire and initially confessed to the crime out of anger directed at her husband for taking a new wife and her sisters-in-law for “destroying her life,” according to newspaper reports of that time. She said her intention was to ruin the party and not kill.
However, she later denied the charges, saying she was home and mentally disturbed at the time she made the earlier confession.
A witness said she saw Ms. Al Enzi flee the scene of the crime seconds before the women-only tent was engulfed in flames. There was only one exit to the tent so a stampede occurred. Police said that 41 women and children died within minutes while the remaining 16 died from injuries.
The incident shocked Kuwaitis and led the emir to ask for austere Eid celebrations that year.
Ms Al Anzi, who is 24, has two mentally handicapped children.
She will be the 73rd person to be executed since Kuwait introduced the death penalty over 40 years ago. The last person executed was in mid-2007 reports AFP.

What a stupid woman... Why kill 57 innocents when one good smash with the balian over the ex husband was all that was needed... I agree with the death penalty in this case.
So long as she definately did it and the confession did not come about due to any torture... If she did kill them then she deserves the punishment.

what if the man was getting married without her consent? I'm not justifying her alleged actions......but wondering how people can agree that the punishment fits the crime without knowing the details......

I guess it does!She killed 57 women including children only to punish his husband? The punishment is justified. I guess she had serious mental issues, ghussa main shaitan sawar hojata hai insaan pe, thats why its been emphasized so much in Islam to control the anger.

The detail which is clear is that she killed 57 innocent women and children knowing full well what she did. Nothing could justify that. The punishment under shariah is crystal clear, unless 57 families are willing to receive blood money from her she should be executed.

Most of the criminals have history of family or some other injustice.

I think the title and the way the story is being presented is misleading.....she's getting the death penalty for killing 57 people by setting fire to a wedding. She could have done a number of other things so that only the husband/SILs could suffer, why drag innocent people and children into it...

perhaps she believed that they people would escape and the fire would simply disrupt the ceremony? not possible?

^ Indeed but it’s a known fact of assasinology that guns and knives are still the most effective killing method. Get close to the target and bang bang, stab stab game over. Arson is a sloppy method and it’s hard to control.
