Jamshedpur, May 16: A woman held captive in a small dingy room by her husband for 10 years for failing to bring a motorcycle along with dowry was freed by the police in Saraikela-Kharswan district of Jharkhand.

The husband, Sanjay Singh, who has married for a second time and has four children by her, kept his first wife, Suman, locked and tortured her frequently for not receiving a two-wheeler shortly after marrying her 11 years ago, at Adityapur, near here, police sources said today.

Suman, now 32, was rescued by her brother with the help of members of a women?s organisation, Mahila Vikash Samity, and the police yesterday.

On a complaint from her father, her husband and father-in-law had earlier been arrested and jailed for 55 days for torturing her. But the case was withdrawn after Suman?s father-in-law and husband promised to treat her well, the sources said.

But later Suman was forced back into solitary confinement and her relatives were turned away and not allowed to meet her, the sources said. She was also not informed about the death of her mother.

Surprisingly, Suman?s neighbours were unaware of her plight.

The police were yet to taken action against her father and husband. (Agencies)

very sad...she needs prayer....

that she needed for 10 years.:)
now fresh air and no men around is what she needs.

Its not well known or appreciated by world that women issue is a much bigger & major problem in INDIA than in Pakistan or any Muslim country .Thank to favourable visible higher female higher education in the higher caste of Hindus that constitutes 10-20% of the gen population ..the propaganda is very successfull in giving the impression that women are liberated in india JUST BECAUSE THEY DONT WEAR CHADOR OR BURQA.

In that respect it would be surprising to find better status of women in gen among muslim countries even though behind purdah. In india aside from povert hunger & unemployment which is common to many muslim countries that negative BIASE against wewomen to cause foeticides (20 millions in decade) 5 lakh bride burnt in last 2 years .& abject neglect of daughters to total abandonment leading to be sold in sex trade.% wise muslim women i can say are less affected by MISOGYNY than there ciounterparts among HINDIANS (hindu indians)

20,000 children married off despite Indian law

============================================

Twenty thousand young children have been married off during a Hindu festival in northern India.

The mass weddings in the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh come despite a government ban on the practice.

They were part of the Akha Teej festival.

Though child marriages have long been held illegal in India, a large number of minors end up tied in matrimony by their parents for religious and social reasons each year.

Police authorities claim they are still in the process of compiling reports of the mass marriages.

A police spokesman said: "If such marriages have taken place it is because of lack of co-operation from the public. When people don't come forward to lodge a formal complaint there is precious little we can do to stop such marriages."

Subash Chandra Mahapatra, a spokesman for Forum for Fact-Finding Documentation and Advocacy, a Raipur-based NGO, told Jagriti newspaper: "We have videotapes of the mass marriages to prove that the married couples were underaged.

"Some of them were barely out of the cradle and were being carried by their parents. The government's proclaimed commitment to eradicating this social evil is only a sham."

Udaybhan Singh, who married off his two-year old daughter Maya, said: "Such marriages have been going on for thousands of years and are a part of our culture. All this talk of social evil is pure nonsense.

"The government is only trying to stop parents from fulfilling their responsibility very early in life. As a father I feel very relieved."

Yes it's sad how women are tortured for such minor things such as not bringing a dowry, all through their lives. There are millions and millons of such cases in Pakistan and India where females are burned or even killed from their in laws. The most tragic outcome of such cases are when the family members of the victims don't get justice from the state as there are no laws that really gives females the rights as it gives males. Mostly the victim's family members are left all alone in their pain, when the inlaws justify their actions by spreading rumours like the girl was of bad caracter and ect... This makes one helpless wish we all could do something in real life.
