How many wives did Prophet Mohammed**(peace be upon him)** have? I head today that it was more than 4.

Coz he was a Prophet and on the highest rank of all Prophets. He knew why he was marrying those ladies and what were the hikmah and reasons behind those weddings. He was getting direct instructions from Allah.
you and me are normal human beings. We cannot reach to that rank which Allah has assigned to him. The mission he was carrying, the responsbilities he had, is of course far more imp and higher than the mission we carry.. which is eat and sleep for most of us.

There are different rules for Prophets. Most of his(SAW) wives were widows and old and there were also political reasons behind some marriages.

The answer is in the Qur'an ... Remember Sayyiduna Muhammad (SAW) lived only in accordance with what he (SAW) was ordered to live by.
Surah 33: 50-52
50. O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowers; and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to thee; and daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated (from Makka) with thee; and any believing woman who dedicates her soul to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her;- this only for thee, and not for the Believers (at large); We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess;- in order that there should be no difficulty for thee. And Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.
51. Thou mayest defer (the turn of) any of them that thou pleasest, and thou mayest receive any thou pleasest: and there is no blame on thee if thou invite one whose (turn) thou hadst set aside. This were nigher to the cooling of their eyes, the prevention of their grief, and their satisfaction - that of all of them - with that which thou hast to give them: and Allah knows (all) that is in your hearts: and Allah is All- Knowing, Most Forbearing.
52. It is not lawful for thee (to marry more) women after this, nor to change them for (other) wives, even though their beauty attract thee, except any thy right hand should possess (as handmaidens): and Allah doth watch over all things.
If you add up all of the allowed marriages of Muhammad (SAW) he took for himself considerably less.

Narrated Qatada: Anas bin Malik said, "The Prophet used to visit all his wives in a round, during the day and night and they were eleven in number." I asked Anas, "Had the Prophet the strength for it?" Anas replied, "We used to say that the Prophet was given the strength of thirty (men)." And Sa'id said on the authority of Qatada that Anas had told him about nine wives only (not eleven). Volume 1, Book 5, Number 268.
This may only be a phrase however considering the prophet Muhammad (SAW) to have 30 times the potency as other men, means where one man's need is fulfilled with one his would be with 30, where one man's need is fulfilled by 4 his would be fulfilled by 120. Read the part in blue above.
So for the prophet Muhammad (SAW) to be given a fair portion of wives as us then he would marry between 30 and 120 wives. He took for himself considerably less even if you take 9, or 11 or even if you take 17. In short, he had more wives because Allah (SWT) had set his (SAW) provision to be more. And why not he is the Rahmatil-'alamin.

this question is not only on Him (pbuh) as per old scriptures there were many prophets in older times who married many more women than him. I dont know what was the reason. could you please help to find the reason, thx
