Wisdom teeth

Is it necessary to remove them if they seem to be growing straight but causing light pain nevertheless? :frowning: Dentists are trained to tell everyone to take them out (very profitable), but removing them can be very painful and often unncessary.

It depends on your threshold of baring the pain. I have taken two out already as soon as they started bothering me. My dentist did not suggest taking them all out. He said, take em out when they start to bother me.

But you are right, it is a pain taking them out and 2-3 days following the surgery. But I would take three days of pain over an unannounced pain that may ruin my vacation, a party or function or any activity that I don't wana miss.

I am hoping pain will go away and it is just the tooth making room for itself.

When they take it out, do they use some sedatives other than local anesthetic? :(

Kareem, you can have your teeth taken out with a local anaesthetic rather than having general surgery but I guess the dentist will know which option is best.

Good luck!

oh man they hurt a lot
my lower right tooth is trying to tear away the gum with its sharp edges to com out of it confines..:(
the gum is totally swollen and feels really weird but its growing straight

If it is growing straight, don't take it out. I am having the same issue, although mine looks like it is already out but just growing a bit and hence the pain.

I have talked to a lot of people and generally everyone has told me that if it is straight just try to bear the pain for a week or so and it will go away after that.

Taking it out is very painful so I am not going to do it unless the pain does not go away :( Good luck.

If it's causing any type of pain, then you should remove them, since the older you get, the harder it is to have them removed, and the more painful it will be. I had 2 of mine removed about 4 years ago. Once I start feeling pain, if at all on the other ones, I'll have them removed also.

If they are nothing but trouble, then why are they called "wisdom" teeth anyway? Just pun?

Yaar I think some pain is natural when they are coming out. They should be removed if they x-ray clearly shows them growing at an angle because then there is really nowhere for them to go. But if they are growing straight, they are generally OK.

why isnt my wisdom tooth showin up:smash: i know ppl my age who’ve already had it removed:(

Uff, you don’t want it to show up. Trust me. It is painnnnn :frowning:

That is the exact reason why I got 2 of my wisdom teeth removed. The swelling and pain were unbearable. Get them removed ASAP.

If it is THAT bad, then you really need to see your dentist and get them removed. ASAP. Also, if it is infected, your dentist can tell and prescribe antibiotics. Don't delay.

ouch :(

If the teeth are not straight then you should probably have them taken out. Also if the pain comes on and off. The pain comes from two things: firstly impacted teeth, ie, where the wisdom tooth is not straight and is affacting the rest of your teeth orientation and secondly from food matter then gets stuck back there and can not be cleaned out. As this begins to rot, it inflames the gums and causes the problem. Generally lasts about a week or so and can be taken care of with either antibiotics or just take care of the pain with pain relievers and clean the place and hope the gum heals well.

In taking the teeth out, generally they will use localized anesthetic (that is only the local area around your wisdom tooth will be numb) and take out the teeth without doing surgery. However in cases where it is a bit more complicated, they may need to give you general anesthetic and also perform surgery to cut the bone and teeth out. Most cases you would need to take at least two days off (the day the teeth is removed and the next) and if you plan it around a weekend all the better. The medicine they give you for the pain is generally a narocotic and means you can not drive while you have it. The pain and swelling should probably last about a week and then wear off... unless you have complications.

Anyway thats based on conversations with a couple of dentists when I had my wisdoms taken out. And generally they wont do all four at once unless it is a really straight forward case since they need to make sure one side heals before they do anything to the other (probably about a 2 weeks to a month period). Also make sure the insurance covers it since generally any wisdom teeth extraction can easily run over a $1K
