Wisdom teeth

Any of you had your wisdom teeth extracted??? what was the procedure like???

Re: Wisdom teeth

I have not but I have seen a couple of extractions. Its a really quick procedure if you go to a experiened dentist. You get local anesthitic(sp?) whick makes your mouth numb so you can't feel the pain. (You may also have the option of sedation or general anesthitic if the wisdom teeth are in an awkward place or you are scared of the dentist). The dentist will dig into your gum to raise the tooth out and then use pliers to pull it out. After the anesthic has worn off it will hurt for a while but normally you get antibiotics to use afterwards to stop infections.

Hope that helps :)

Re: Wisdom teeth

Depends what type of wisdom tooth... is it impacted ??? usually they give you local anesthesia and extract ..

Re: Wisdom teeth

it is impacted....................and I fear going to the dentists.............I only pay them a visit for a cleaning twice a year.

Re: Wisdom teeth

I would like to say thats its long and painful and many people have died from it but Mahru I guess you will ask for a serious answer and I will be all confused because it is a serious anwer..... (having said all that I guess most peopel died hundreds of years ago and i havent heard of recent cases)

My dentist told me that its best to have it out under local anaesthetic.... if that helps:)

Re: Wisdom teeth

Thank you so much Ms. Lazy for staying on the track of seriousness;)

Re: Wisdom teeth

If its an IMPACTED then your regular dentist will not do it .... You will have to visit an oral surgeon... Do you have insurance ??? that is if you are in USA

Re: Wisdom teeth

yes i have coverage. I know i made a consultation with the oral surgeon. So, hopefully it will be a painless procedure. I am really nervous.

Re: Wisdom teeth

There is no reason to be nervous. Remember dentists do extractions all the time so they are experienced at it. If you are nervous then ask your dentist about having the extractions under sedation or general anaesthic. Also its best to get them taken out as soon as possible if they are hurting you because a short period of pain after extraction is much better than a long period of pain with the wisdom teeth which can lead to infection and decay.

Re: Wisdom teeth

I was able to get in to see the oral surgeon tomorrow at noon. I am nervous but InshaAllah all will go well. Say a prayer for me as i am a nervous wreck when it comes to dentists

Re: Wisdom teeth

Re: Wisdom teeth

I was put to sleep when my 4 wisdom teeth were taken out in one go while I was in university. I don't even remember what happened. Actually, I don't even remember what happened that entire day. I just remember the next day lying in bed with my cheeks all puffy, but after 2 days the puffiness went away and everything was back to normal. I didn't really feel any pain except some throbbing for 2 days, but tylenol with codeine killed the pain and everything was back to normal.

I also got another tooth pulled with local anasthetic, the dentist gave me a walkman to listen to, but I could still hear him breaking my tooth and some grinding sounds. He didn't do a good job because the tooth broke while he was taking it out so he had to dig in my gum to take out the pieces. I didn't feel much, but after he was done I was suprised at how much blood was on the dentists gloves, tools, and towels!

Re: Wisdom teeth

The procedure:

I was put to sleep when I got my 4 wisdom teeth taken out. The teeth were still underneath the gums, but were pushing on my other teeth so they had to come out. Ermm...the bottom two were broken into 2 pieces and the top 2 were extracted whole. The stitches they used disolved after a bit. I was extremely swollen and I had a lot of bruising because of my light skin colour. What else....oh yea, I was on baby food for a bit--just the custard stuff. You can't use a straw because the sucking movements can rip your stitches....
