so i am playing around with wireless settings… since i am on strike 1 by the provider, so i gotta start thinking of restricting the net to only my household, i noticed at given time at least 3-4 mac addresses were connected that didn’t belong to me ..
so i’m thinking, (router supports 128) 64 wep (opensystem, not shared key) 10digit (hex) key, no more broadcast of presence, so PRETTY much u HAVE TO know my ssid, channel, premeable setting, 10digit key, and keep playing around with them to EVENTUALLY come on my network.
i feel itchy about hardcoding mac addresses, but should i? i mean doesnt all of THAT will stop ‘neighbourhood kiddies’ ?
i know 64bit can be broken, but there is no broadcast…sooo???
hmm, even 128bits can be cracked, but you need to have a laptop with wifi and running linux on it to do this. So I dont think any neighbourhood kiddie would try that. Unless you have some very sensitive data on your network and some big shot hacker would come and park his car outside your house and and... (know what I mean)
khair.. If I was to setup a wireless connection, I will make sure its secured as much as it can be. And make sure no one is able to share the wireless connection and cant see no files on network..
WPA is better than WEP, but a lot of vendors don't support it. As for WEP cracking, 128 is as easy as cracking 64. Your only target should be keeping out the kiddies around u as u said.
At my place I have WEP enabled and then do MAC filtering, and I change my passphrases every other week. Plus I have Airsnare running on the server to inform me of any new MACs on the network. It scared me a couple of times in the middle of the night when som war-driver passed by. I was thinking of disabling the AP via some automated scripts if new MACs come up suddenly, but haven't had a chance yet.
do nothing.. just turn off DHCP and switch to static using MAC addresses of your known workstations..
let people kill themself trying to break your encryption etc.. agar net access he naheeN milay gaa toa kya karaiN gay tumharay network maiN break in kar kay..
hmmmmm... i feel awkward about static settings on local network. . eventually in 5-6 days of uptime, windows starts to messup.. and u're forced to reboot (if win98) .. khair, yeah disabling dhcp, hardcoding mac addresses, hardcoding static settings, and all that would be nice..
