Is it possible for one to, say, ***acquire ***a wireless network key somehow? If so, how exactly would one go about doing such a thing? (hypothetically speaking, of course)

What kind of encryption is it? WEP has been cracked, for WPA you need a dictionary attack. But FYI, u can acquare the key by social networking too :)

hmmm, there are many noble reasons of ‘recovering’ wep key … lets say you don’t know how to reset the router and you would like to use your wireless. So, in that case, you can download BackTrack … download link here
Then you would burn the iso to a CD and boot from that CD.
and then see this video(use internet explorer)

Genius ustaad, if she doesn’t know what WPA and WEP is then i doubt she’d know what to do with Backtrack 
Phati, u don’t just walk up to ur neighbor and ask, u come up with a story on how ppl have weak keys and ur doing a report and wanted to find out if their key is strong enuff and ur going to get a security team test the neighborhood. Come on now, i thought u were smart

i did it once i hacked into "our" network and used it. then daddy got to know about it but since then he has allowed "me" to use it. so now we both share:D

^ no … but then again “EASY” is subjective..
anyway, reset the router ( take a paper clip and put it in the little hole behind the router for 4 seconds ) At this point, your wireless should be back to default settings i.e. no wireless security and you will be able to get online
if u care abt securing it again, then go to http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 --username and passwords depend on the router … just tell us the router brand and we will be able to tell you the username and password. Once you get in, find wireless section and assign a wep key

ohhh man I just thought of a GENIUS plan! 
I’m going to install a keylogger onto my laptop..then, I’ll ask my sister if she can put the password into my laptop so I can use the internet for just a few minutes, and then she’ll delete it off…and then I’ll check the keylog and BAM I’ll have the key!

U must be really not liked in the family to resort to this.
Just "keylog" the password for the router, then log into the admin mode and find out what the WEP/WPA key is.

The best wireless security is not to advertise your SSID...
I don't know about anybody else but this method is proven and tested by me at my *last *job. After deploying over 150 cisco access points across a factory floor, with 128 bit encryption, the WEP key gave up after few hours of network scan through netstumbler!
Aftering hiding (say NO to braodcast SSID) the SSID, no network scanner would pick up the network hence no possible way to break in unless with physical wired connection.
