What is used ( I know its GSM but what bands?) and what type of phones? Can a phone from the US be used there? What types work and what needs to be done to make them work there. Also would the cell phones work once brought back here?
hmcq, the frequency band Pakistani GSM uses is European band.... that is 900 and 1800, while US GSM operates on 850 and 1900. There are very small number of phones that have both bands.... NEC 515 and 525 both have Euro and US bands. But almost all phones in US are LOCKED to a carrier. For some phones there are 'unlocking' techniques available but I don't have that info.
NEC 515/525 phones are available only from AWS, they do have some sort of "roaming partnership" with Pakistani carriers, but there might be some restrictions.
Did all this rambling help?
he is right
ok can you unlock the services once you get there? or would you have to buy the cell phone there?
I mean can you take a gsm phone from here and change something once you get to Pakistan and use it while you are there and come back and change it back once you get back here
gsm
triband
unlocked
hmcq you should PM dewana tera and ask him he gave me a lot of excellent info abt which cell fone to get when i was coming to pak n needed a cell fone that worx here
Last year I took my SonyEricsson T68 mobile phone (got it here from T-Mobile) with me to Pakistan...had it "unlocked" from Hafiz center (Lahore) for around Rs.1200 (since at that time this phone set was new to local market)...got a SIM from Ufone, for Rs. 1500, and voila!...there I had a working cell phone in hand :)
That Rs. 1500 cost covered my intial Rs. 500 worth of calls and also one time setup fee.
As other ppl said already u need a GSM tri-band phone. There are tons of them around. You can buy lots of them, unlocked from expansys.com. If you or a friend has been with T-Mobile for over 3 mths call them up and they will give you the unlocking code (you’d need the IMEI # of the phone and some other info which they’d tell you how to look up). Some of the ones I know have tri-band
- Ericsson T39, T68i, T610
- PalmOne Tungsten W, Treo 600 (this one is actually quad-band)
There are tons of others. Check this site (search for tri-band):

Wireless in Pakistan
Can anybody provide me weblinks of Pakistani wireless companies here?
Also, if anybody can provide me about the "deals" these companies provide to its users i.e. Rs 2000 per month with 200 free outgoing minutes etc.?
Do they sell cell phones at "subsidized" prices? Meaning that if you go in open market SAME NEW cell phone will be more expensive?
Also, if anyone knows that the cell phones sold by these wireless service providers are LOCKED to these carriers as American companies do?
I know I'm asking for TOO MUCH info here :D
Anyone?
Okay, I tried on my own… found following companies:
Ufone (I think they are GSM)
Mobilink (www.mobilinkgsm.com)
Paktel (TDMA or GSM? )
Instaphone (using TDMA
)
Most of these websites have “per minute” charges listed for pre and post paid plans. But don’t have right “Contact us” email addresses ![]()
Anyone helping in “insider” contacts? ![]()
Check out this tread in Bazaar and I am moving your thread there so that you can get more appropriate responses

Paktel service sucks
if u r a pvt user, get the Mobilink JAZZ lines, they have different services, including prepaid cards and monthly lines of diff costs
this is the best option service quality n price wise...decide if u want a card or line according to ur usage pattern
i heard they have a limited offer where they r offerring lines for half the price and its expiring very soon
Show me some rates? How much for monthly fees for say a few hundard anytime minutes? Do they do unlimited nights and weekends?
I remembered my cousins who had 'em said the incoming is free! Is it still true?

ahmadjee, look at www.mobilinkgsm.com it will give you an idea of monthly fares, per minute fares etc.
Incoming call is free, that how Europe works as well, but not America. Its called "Calling Party Pays" in GSM standard.
