Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

So if I want to wipe out my hard disk safely and cleanly, which software would you recommend.

  • Under Linux I used the command “dd if=/dev/zero” to fill the drive with zeros.

  • In Windows I have “Eraser”.

Your favorite freeware?

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

I use DriveWasher. All u need to do is boot with the floppy and it would wipe out the whole hard drive. Good for cleaning up before u give/donate/sell your equipment.

Dude.
I have a little present for you. Wait.

Here have lots of fun with. dd

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

Is it Freeware TofiBaba?

Data will still not be erased properly!

That will make the drive useless for any future use AND I heard the data could still be partially / completely recovered.

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

What if the disk is wiped from windows set-up?

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

Why? whats wrong with "dd". I did erase couple of disks with that. It fills the drives with zeros, all sort of random stuff you know.

Or you meant something else?

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

yeah some thing else

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

sorry I see what you mean.
Wait.

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

See the best way to erase data properly is to overwrite it many times randomly, so that even if it is recovered it is useless.

Deleting or Formating doesn't do that, and hence the data could be stolen.

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

Yeah k_a, I know the site.

Thanks anyway.

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

dd is one of the best thing happened to man kind

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

^^ LOL.

What is the second best?

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

first is women, sec boxing, third electronics, 4th linux etc etc

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

Seriously DW once I was dying to look into BIOS and how peripherals were setup in processor 's mem map.
I worked so hard to find that out.
And one I saw what dd was all about and how you could just copy any portion of you mem in any format on you screen, I was so so surprised.

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

eraser seems kind of enough for Wiping the HDD. Or ERD commander tools can be used as well.

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

I don't think u can boot with a floppy/cd to wipe out the attached HD, which is usually what one needs to wax-off HD's on old PC's.

PS: I meant Eraser doesn't come with a bootable floppy/cd

Re: Wiping the hard disk cleanly - your favorite?

Sirkar,, ERD commander hai naa for the bootable stuff and making a hard disk as clean as new..

And with eraser,, the best practise is to delete manually everything you want like partitions, programs,my documents and other hidden stuff, and then just select the option of erasing the UNUSED space.. By this eraser will only write in the free space, thus cleaning up your deleted mess :D/
