I’m not a genius when it comes to computers, so before I throw my PC out of the window I wanted to give you all a chance of tackling the problem with my computer. Here’s the deal:
I have two OS installed: winXP and win98 on different hard disks, and usually use winXP. Everything was working fine till the following happened: I updated my Norton firewall and AV and scanned my PC. it only found one minor virus that i deleted. Subsequently I downloaded a few files using e-mule. Still everything was fine. Then I updated my Norton LiveReg to see how long I still could download new virusdefinitions.
…and then suddenly Internet failed. I just could not go online. My modem and DSL line were working perfectly, but i cudn’t go online. I disabled my firewall and still nothing happened. Tried uninstalling Norton firewall and AV, and then suddenly i did manage to go online. I reinstalled Norton and internet stopped again
I de-installed it and it was fine again. I then installed another Firewall (zonealarm) and internet stopped again. However this time deinstalling it didn’t help, and now im left with no internet at all in winXP. now no matter what i do internet doesn’t start (re/de-installing Norton, DSL, ZoneAlarm. Now even I can’t install NOrton anymore since i cannot skip the registration part)
However, in win98 I can still manage to go online, even with a firewall (zonealarm)
So wat can I do to make internet working again in winXP???
I don’t wanna format everything cuz i will have to back-up too many files, and the formatting and re-installing takes ages
Ok, you were using Norton for a long time? right. and then you updated it?
Or did just install it recently?
I think you can leave Zonealarm, it should be ok. check the zoealarm settings though. run the local network wizard and stuff. so it can add it to the safe zone.
When I get home, I will check my own zonealrm settings and will let you know exactly.
(maybe in the mean time some other techie will be able to help you out)
yeah Gizzy, I was using Norton for 2 years now or so. ZoneAlarm come into the picture only after the first time when I encoutered the problem.
The things was that for Norton I had a LiveUpdate crack which ensured I could get updates for 100 years or so. However this was brought back to 3 years after the update (when Norton found one minor virus), so in order to correct that I tried to reinstall LiveUpdate, and that's when the problems started. But uninstalling norton didn't help
ok nescio bhai this is a good way to trouble shoot your network
I assume that u r using ur NIC to connect to DSL...same goes for the modem also
looks like ur cables NIC, MODEM are all working fine cuz they work on 98
open xp first thing Disable ur Norton Internet Security...and ur windows firewall if u have SP2
the find ur IP address
so in the commond prompt window type ipconfig/release
then type ** ipconfig/renew**
open ur browser and check if u are able to browse
if still not since its XP uninstall and reinstall ur NIC in device manager
then again do an ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew in command prompt
check if it works
if it still doesn't then its ur browser is failing to resolve dns
to check this
go to command promp again and type
ping www.google.com
and see if u can send and recieve packets if it says cannot find host www.google.com the ping the ip address of google which is the follwoing command
ping 64.233.187.104
now if u can send and recieve packets(data) then there is definitely comething wrong with the browser...in that case go to ur intrenet options (in IE)delete cookies temp files...put ur security settings to medium, privacy settings to low and IN PROGRAM TAB click reset web settings, and in the advanced tab click restore defaults...still doesnt work then download firefox broswer
hope this helps...any problems in that pm me
^homer, thanks for your suggestions, I'll definitely try them out. But I perhaps forgot to mention that not only IE doesn't work, but also Firefox, msn or any other program that uses internet.
I would suggest uninstall all norton. restart.
Uninstall your NIC / Ehternet card. Restart.
computer should detect and install the Ethernet card and it should start workin fine.
^yeah, ZA only comes into the picture when the problem was already occurring with Norton and without Norton. Somewhere in between the connection started working again without Norton, so I decided it's better to install ZA. Once I did that it failed again
