Ok,so this is from a confused mommy who lives in an area where we get tons of snow and pretty low temps and winter lasts till April..!
And this mommy has a 17.5 month old at the moment.
And mommy went winter clothes shopping today, bought some stuff but is a bit confused…so needs expert opinions .
What kinda outerwear do toddlers need…??
Last year she was just crawling at that time so I used to have a one piece thing..I used to put her in it and zip it up from her toes to her head…and she was all packed up and ready to go.
I saw snow suits today. They look bulky (obviously..!!)…Will I need both the pieces…??..Are they comfortable to wear…??
I bought the heavy duty jacket thing in size 3T and when I tried it on after getting home,it fits her well otherwise but the sleeves are too long…!..(Now I am thinking if I Should keep it or not, although I got a great deal on it…)
I never got the snow pants…
Then I got another fancier version of a wool/fleece like coat, just because she looked so cute in it…
Then I have one from last year. Its a heavy duty thing but I don’t think it will last her too long (it is 18 mths size, and was a gift)
My question is do I need the snow pants on a regular day to day basis (assuming we wont be playing in the snow..!!).Is a regular jacket with mittens and cap sufficient …??
I got no snow pants, but a few jackets(cotton one,a fleece one, and a heavy duty four layer thing…and I also got snow boots (because my husband thought they were cute).I have never shopped so erratically…!
Oh my I want to share my frustration for infants snow suit..there are just not any cute ones for baby boys!!! I spent so many hours y'day at Burlington coat factor and babies r us trying to find one but no luck...where doni look??
Sorry can't help you much withbyourvdilemma..what do I know :(
GTG We got a snowsuit as a gift but I never used it for her when she was an infant. It just felt too bulky. And I couldn't put her in the carseat with it. So she was usually layered in sweaters and socks and booties and stuff, and then we used the JJ Cole Bundle Me. That worked best for her.
Oh and usually you'll cover the carseat with a blanket when taking him on short little runs to and from the car.
oh ok.. makes sense!! so probably we shouldnt buy any considering we have this bundle me and I dont want to overheat him.. I know a baby who was kept so warm in winter that his skin started to break due to dryness in the house! I am afraid of doing that to my baby :-(
Is the cold similar in your part of the country same as here.. I am asking becuase you have spent quite a few winters here!
^Winters aren't as long here and it doesn't snow as consistently, but it does get that cold often.
Just to be safe, I guess check with what other folks in your area have done. But yes it is shocking how easily babies overheat. And you definitely don't want them uncomfortable in their carseats.
Gtg…I had the snowsuit for E like the one you posted a pic of (from Macy’s).It worked great for us.
I got it for a nice price and I knew it will last me a season,so it was all good.My daughter was about 9 months old around that time when we used it.She did use to get tight in her car seat with it but it was no too uneasy for her .
For you I would suggest using the JJcole thing and maybe get a snow suit if you need to get sth extra(most likely you wont be using both together,to avoid overheating the baby)nothing more than that.It is also easy as they are almost always in the car seat so you can cover them up with a blankie when transporting them between the car and wherever you are going.
yesterday’s shopping trip has left me thinking,it was indeed easier when they were infants. For now I have decided I am not buying snow pants, because I know I wont be making her walk in the snow so I dont need that…I need to find a snow jacket that fits better. The one I got now has too long sleeves…and I had to fidget with it to bring her hands out of it.But I also know that if I get a size smaller,it will hardly fit in the chest area.Maybe I need to try another brand…:-//
This is the snow jacket I got for her…(the colors look different here,it is a light grey and pink)
And this is the other one we got just because we thought it was looking cute on her…(I am thinking it will not suffice for extreme colds, but the good thing is that it is long enough to cover her legs too..Should I keep it…??..)
i love the ruffle coat.. soooo cute, so lady like!!!
jacket seems good for our winter weather!
did you check Marshalls? I saw sooo many jackets for girls there yday and nada for boys! I feel like whole world plans against the cute stuff for boys!!
gtg, have you checked Gap? they have cute snowsuits but you have to see them in person- they don’t look that great online.
for the kidlet, i’ve bought a snow suit sack type of thing from joe fresh- its kind of like this but without the bear thing on the front and its dark brown- http://images.canadianlisted.com/nlarge/brand-new-joe-fresh-snowsuit-for-sale_4995059.jpg
it has zippers so it can go from one “leg” to two split legs if he prefers that and its extra long and loose so they fit into it with their sweaters and all of that. i’ve also bought a larger size for him because mA he’s quite tall for his age. it will be good when he’s in his stroller and in his car seat, i think, but i won’t really know until he’s in it, i suppose.
otherwise, i’m planning to do as sahar did- thermal onesies, sweaters, warm jackets, hats eith ear flaps, mittens, thick socks, etc. and of course, staying in when its -1000 outside haha gotta love them canadian winters!
you should also check hanna andersson’s website for baby outerwear- they have some cute stuff and their quality is amazing.
chipsy, i couldn’t see the coat you posted the link to, but how CUTE are those winter hats?? oh my gosh!
Gtg...Yes I did.I got an almost same snow jacket from there. The good thing is that its sleeves fit well.Although I liked the colors of the Carter one better, but it has to go back. The sleeves were long and tight.
SGC...Wonder why you can't see it.
About the winter hats...I KNOW...!!...I got so many last year and hardly used all of them.I am trying to keep them to a minimum this year.I need to stop impulsive shopping...:(
I always wonder what to put on my toddler too. When she was an infant, it was easy, we would put her in warm clothes and then use a JJ cole cover thingy that Gia posted a link to and we were set. Kanzah has both snow pants and a jacket which she can wear separetly but i always wonder if her legs are cold. Do you guys put thermals underneath your kids' clothes?
Ira.. I used to go skiing a lot and even though snow pants are wonderful, you HAVE to wear thermal leggings underneath, something to keep you warm and snuggly. You should definitely dress her in cotton thermals under her jeans and such..do they play outside at the day care in winter?
looks like we dont need to buy a snow suit just yet.. If I feel like we need one, we will go and get it! for now, I am going with all the warm sweaters that my mom has knitted for him and the JJ cole bundle up!!
^ gap has these fab thermal onesies. They keep gabe so warm and cozy- and if u buy two or more, they're always on sale.I got his ear flap hats from walmart of all places! So cute and warm in wool and fleece.
Sahar...I am keeping it...I just love it...:DGtg...Yes I did.I got an almost same snow jacket from there. The good thing is that its sleeves fit well.Although I liked the colors of the Carter one better, but it has to go back. The sleeves were long and tight.SGC...Wonder why you can't see it.About the winter hats...I KNOW...!!...I got so many last year and hardly used all of them.I am trying to keep them to a minimum this year.I need to stop impulsive shopping...:(
I just see the homepage :(
Ok, the one piece thing that you have talked about is also avaialable in toddlersizes upto a size 3. It has space for you to stick the feet/shoes out. These are bulky but great for places with long winters. Some even come with mittens attached (child can choose to wear them or not). Carters carries them. The other option is to buy a thick jacket and put on thermal underpants under his/ her regular pants. Buy hooded jackets even if you are buying snow hats as the hood covers the ears and neck area. Mittens/ gloves are a must. The snow bib is not needed unless you are palying in teh snow. We buy a very cheap one each year for those 2 days they play in the snow. Try Walmart for that. Also buy a light jacket for early fall/ spring.
