The company I work for announced this week that they will be outsourcing the development to CSC (Computer Science Company) in couple of months. It was not sudden the company did a good job of keeping the employees up to date as things progressed. But when the announcement was officially made it left a bitter taste in people’s mouth.
Some people have worked at the company for more than 15 years, some people 25 or even 35 years. The person who has worked 35 years was outsourced and this person would have retired in a year’s time. She now lost all her retirement benefits. She is not the only one who is in this situation, I know few more people who were 1,2, or 3 years away from their retirement.
For people who have been at the company for more than 10 years it is a difficult change to accept but for people like me who have been there less than 3 years should be an easy or at least easier change. But to my surprise a lot of people, almost anyone I talked to, didn’t like it either. Majority of this group are women who don’t like the change, reason being they accepted this job because it was close to work, and close to their kids’ school, day care and they have a settled life and now the possibility of travel and changing clients and long commutes.
Personally, I don’t mind the change, my only worry is my educational benefits, rest of the benefits are pretty standard like any other big corporation. I have many years of consulting background so I think I should be able to fit right in. I will hate travel since it will compromise my studies and time with the kids but hey, I still have a job. Plus the big benefit I see that I will be working for an IT company and have better shot at building a better career.
Many people at work said that they hate the fact that the change is being imposed and they don’t have a say in it and that is what they don’t like. Hmmm… so that made me think..
Winds of Change, it is like a fart, it stinks but you have to put up with it and if you use an air-freshener to tone it down it takes a stench of its own, none of them are pleasant.
BTW – anyone here works for CSC or knows someone show works for CSC?
Has anyone here gone through this process? If so how was your experience?
