Hopefully M$ will dish out a service pack or 2 before that time!

"Computer makers have been told they’ll no longer be able to get Windows XP OEM by the end of this year, despite consumer resistance to Vista and its compatibility problems.

By early 2008, Microsoft’s contracts with computer makers will require companies to only sell Vista-loaded machines. “The OEM version of XP Professional goes next January,” said Frank Luburic, senior ThinkPad product manager for Lenovo. “At that point, they’ll have no choice.” "

This is just the OEM versions, retails and open-license versions would still be sold.

I'd love to see branded machines being sold without any OS, particularly laptops. Let the people choose what they want. It will knock down the H/W prices too. But so far its just my dream.

Well, Dell has started selling Linux prebuilt into their machines, so atleast ppl have a choice now.

I just noticed that most machines actually come with FreeDOS kit with them, and then you can install Linux on it if you want.

at out university we have corporate versions of the OS so all our branded PCs and laptops come without any operating system (or with FreeDOS) and the IT center installs our own coporate software on it....
some ppl sill like to buy without consulting IT and get preloaded OS, but having computers (laptops) without OS is not a dream....

i was checking online HP site for a laptop for my friend, and the HP site for "build ur own laptop" does give u option to select FreeDOS instead of Xp/vista....

I recently bought hp pavillion dv6000. awesome laptop in terms of sleekness and looks and graphics (I opted for nvidia 7400 card). If you or your friend decides to buy then check out costco.com apparently you get it built/customized cheaper there than hp.com. unfortunately I found that out too late to save couple of hundred bucks.
