Linux is in a league of its own... but the development of Windows over the years shouldn't be discounted. I used to be a linux enthusiast about 7 - 8 years ago... did a lot of sys admin / net admin stuff... ran BIND and WWW servers... even wrote device drivers for Motorolla and trained IBM developers in writing kernel routines. That being said, I always used Windows in parallel - it couldn't be helped cuz of its pervasiveness in the business world. Microsoft did a lot of stupid things along the way over these 25 years, but in the end, they've marketed their product well, and their product features appeal to the average end user.
^ yeah man I have some fond memories from those days - now I feel like I've forgotten everything cuz I haven't touched it in such a long time.
At one point, I was "the" geek linux guy and got a lot of consulting business just based on my skillset from just word of mouth. Alas, I got into management consulting and then started my Ph.D. - so couldn't keep up.
1-embedded OS I made my own OS out of linux binaryies which ran off 32mb flash card on (system on board computer 3" by 5") it only took 9-10mb space.
2-A whole signal/data acquisition system which would capture signals at max 44000/pre sec and display it in oscillator kind of way on pc.(I believe It actually capture ultrasonic waves too )
3-machine vision system, with web cam + V3linux interface
4-Device driver for usb device.(it doesnt do much becase manufacturer did not really supported me)
You asked wrong question from a wrong guy, lolzz

Anyone remember Windows 3.1? That was truly what made windows mainstream.
yep... my first PC had Windows 3.1 on it - ermm - in 1991/1992. and also once I joined University... I wrote my first C program on the 3.1 platform - this was in 1996.
At my first tech job, they were running their file server on OS/2 (good ole Presentation Manager interface) and later switched to Win NT.
All this seems very long ago, but it's only 10 - 12 years. I guess we've just come a very long way in the last 10 years in terms of computing and all.
