windows on mac

I just wanted to find out if anyone has tried booting windows on an intel mac because I heard it was possible. Was it hard to do? Does it work? Does it mess up your mac?

Re: windows on mac

control yar,.. itney questions to us ne bhi nahi poochey they..

here is wat you need to load windows on mac..
was it hard: n/a
does it work: n/a
does it mess up my mac: n/a

Re: windows on mac

I did it on a MacMini
It was not too hard but it took a few tries
It does work
It doesn't mess up you Mac, just gives you the option of dual booting either into Mac or XP.
But once I had it setup I couldn't rationalize why i would be working in XP on a Mac when i already have 2 XPs sitting there, so I blew away the install.
BTW it only works with Intel based Macs, so if you are going the Mac way G5 is out.

PS: Oh genie man, har cheez mein N/A tho why the bother with the 3 lines :p
PS2: And you were making 5watery feel bad that he replied so fast after your new thread.

Re: windows on mac

It would be nice to have both operating system if possible since there are probably some softwares that's not compatible with mac (I want the laptop). I heard that mac don't get virus a lot so using windows will make it vulnerable to virus though, right?

Re: windows on mac

By the way... where can you find the steps to boot windows on intel based macs??? Are they easy to understand and follow (since I'm not really good with computers)?

Re: windows on mac

You can either go to the link that Genius provided or on the Apple website has directions and requirements:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303572

What do you need XP for? Most normal ppl software packages are available for Macs. Especially if you are concerned with viruses, stick with Mac.

thanks!!! :)

Re: windows on mac

Tofi,

Some review sites say that using XP to boot on a Mac is a faster option to run certain software than using Rosetta to convert the Mac version. Checkout yesterday's CNET's comparison between MacPro laptop with Acer laptop. Unless they booted XP on Mac, it was lagging far behind the Acer in terms of some software speeds. I guess it depends on whether you need to or run those specialized software or not. Most of them dealt with video/music/image rendering.

Re: windows on mac

I thought some sites are not compatible with mac... like for school stuff..

Re: windows on mac

Sites are compatible with web browsers. Internet Explorer was available for Mac's till last year (version 5 I think it was), but they don't support it anymore. There's always Safari or FireFox i think is available too. Plus MS Office has a version for Mac's, so what else you want?

Faisal, Mac's may use Intel CPU's but they don't use a bios, that may be partly the reason why XP loads faster. As for other apps there are Mac version available for most projects for video/music/image rendering. As DS said he's not that tech savvy, so for him just using Mac OS should be sufficient.

Re: windows on mac

No, I am not focussing on DS’s original query. I am talking about your comment that you uninstalled BootCamp. This thing is important to me, as most likely my next computer will be a laptop, and I am debating whether to go with Apple or stick with PC. My primary driver for this decision will be the ability to efficienty process video editing and DVD-creation software, in addition to image editing software.

Anyway, here is the comparison I mentioned in my earlier post. (fingers crossed that the link works correctly)

CNet compared Apple MacPro to Acer latop on a bunch of different criteria. I am just sending the link, where they talk about performance criteria.

Re: windows on mac

Wow I'm surprised with those results. I was under the impression tha Mac's have historically been the choice for graphic/video people. I hadn't seen that article.
But for you I guess Mac won't be a good choice at all. If you really want efficiency with rendering software and DVD creating I would suggest going with a desktop. My Dell D610 is maxed out in the hardware department but to burn a 4.36 gb .iso DVD image it took me about 1.5+ hours. Whereas on my PC, which actually has less memory and CPU and the same speed hard-drive it took me about 25 mnts for the same image. Rendering is a whole different ball game altogether.

Re: windows on mac

I already have a desktop PC which I currently use for creating DVD's. Its an Athelon (not 64) and its not that fast anyway, so I usually start the process at night and leave it on. But with the new family room redesign I am contemplating, the PC will move upstairs to be replaced by a powerful laptop, connected to the TV as well as used as primary computer for all other stuff.

Re: windows on mac

TofiBaba: I did not get that. Can you please tell me how? Thanks.

Re: windows on mac

I do the same and have the same spec machine: Athlon XP+ 3000

Re: windows on mac

As soon as I’d posted that I knew someone was going to ask for an explanation.
I read that in a couple of places that Mac’s dont use a Bios but something different (which I can’t remember). This makes the Mac’s load faster. The problem is I don’t remember where I read it. I’m going to look for it and will post a link when/if I find it.

Re: windows on mac

Here you go:
Extensible Firmware Interface

That’s what Mac with Intel inside is using.

If you look at the following page there’s a mention of EFI and Bios in the right hand column:
