Well, the argument that they had to make future generation happy doesn't stand because they had to rethink omission of start menu and half-ass it back into the OS with 8.1 and win10.
If you are tired of windows 8.1 and win10 turns out to be another disaster then Mint and Ubuntu linux (use gnome3 and not unity though) are a good option on the cheap side - I am already using it for few years for banking.

they are just re-adding a rewamped version of start menu. Rest of the things which you based your previous argument on are still there i.e., Tablet/Desktop mode (now its more seamless to switch), MetroUI/TabletUI even on desktop etc. w
