Win98 woes

:salam:
yeh I know, who in his right mind would still be using Win98 but there are many who are still stuck with this O.S. Histroy rolled infront of me eyes when I had to work on a Win98 system yesterday. I was asked to back it up, clean it and then install WinXP on it. After struggling with it for like 4 hours or so, I managed to complete the task but I faced some problems. Firstly, I wasn’t able to get the ‘Sharing’ tab in Win98 … due to which I was unable to share files by directly entering the IP address of the target machine. I had to setup an FTP server in order to get the basic ‘copy paste’ feature working.

Here is what the exact problem was:
On my XP system, I setup a share with right permissions for the ‘EVERYONE’ group. When I accessed this share from the Win98 system, by entering the IP address in explorer, I am prompted for a password? It asks for a password for the IPC share:

\192.168.0.1\Share\IPC$](file://\192.168.0.1ShareIPC$)

Why is this? and how can I get past this?

Just curious to know the answer as it might help in the future.

Re: Win98 woes

You need to login to Windows98 using one of the user account & password that you have in WindowsXP.
If you are not prompted to login to Windows98, then in Start menu go to log off. You can create a user name with password on the fly when logging in to windows98. I think there was also an icon called "Password" in control pannel to setup windows98 to prompt login when it starts.

Re: Win98 woes

if its windows xp, u should have options of "enable SIMPLE file sharing" do that, and u will notice that magically it works.. with advanced file sharing, old OS's like 98 run in probz.. i had the similar cuz i was trying to setup advanced way of doing it.. rights and permissions and everything..

:(

Re: Win98 woes

Plus i believe you need to put the 98 pc into the same workgroup as the XP pc, even if XP belongs to a domain put the domain in the workgroup field on 98.

Actually why don't u just upgrade the machine to xp first? It should clean itself out and put sp2 and u'd be all set. That way all the networking part would be straightforward.

Re: Win98 woes

Sorry guys, couldn’t get back to my query … bit busy these days. So, I’ll reply to the posts one by one.

Yeh, I tried loggin in with the username n’ pass of the WinXP user but didn’t work. For some reason it kept prompting for a password to the IPC$ share. I did create a user but it didn’t help. In the Network Properties, I changed the Network logon option [something] but even that didn’t help. At one instance I was able to browse the network [workgroup] but when I tried to access the PC with the share, it said something like ‘You do not have access privileges’ etc.

I’ve unchecked this ‘magic’ manter cause I like to be in control of what is to be shared etc. That said, I granted the necessary rights to the user in order to access the shared folder but it kept asking for a password to the IPC$ share :konfused::frowning:

I think this is the only option that I didn’t try … hmmm

amm … I did try to upgrade the machine to WinXP … but I was unable to do so .. no it was Win2K .. I tried upgrading it to win2K but realised that I didn’t have the CD key with me … I wonder who forgot to pack it … :whistling:

Re: Win98 woes

The problem is that you can't use "domain\user" format when using 98 that's why its necessary to be in the same workgroup.

As for cd key, it should've been on the cd case that u purchased :p

Re: Win98 woes

i KNOW! and i understand that.. but if u have situation of sharing/not sharing.. being in control of material like pentagon’s nucleur secrets (for example:p) u will have to use simple sharing..

just put stuff in diff folder and dont share..

ur call

 as i said..

Re: Win98 woes

^ :Salute: if i run into the same problem again, I'll definitely try that out ... inshaAllah :)
