DD quite interesting thread- I ll only answer the last part of your question- My dear mother ( May Allah swt bless her soul in Jannat al Firdous) Ameen had renal failure- when she was diagnosed her children all came forward to donate a kidney- we went through necessary protocols, screening and testing - and all the while the consultants were explaining that even if they did find a tissue match- it would be a tricky thing as there were other complications- anyway to cut a long story short, the crunch came when the consultants explained that there was to be no goodness in donating a kidney considering the medical risks of the operations due to External complications and the fact that mums health was deteriorating so rapdily that she would not of withstood the ordeal- also they took into account the quality of life for the person donating- alhamdolilah- we had 5 more glorious but extremely delibetating years for ammi ji when finally Allah swt bestowed his Mercy on my beloved mother- Yes i was ready to donate my own kidney as were my entire siblings-I hope this answers some of your points raised.

Thank you for sharing poppies. Did she continue with dialysis ? DIalysis has a mortality rate that is 20 percent for the first year, and increases every year. Five years is usually the maximum viability for it.
Transplants can work for decades but 10 years at least.
DD, your question is incomplete. most countries have you get on a list and they let you know when you get a match. Also depends on if the donor is dead or alive. In pakistan its a comlicated legal procedure to acquire a body part from a living person. Paying for it is illegal. However desperate family members can easily compensate with money on the side.

Dear Koozzager Many thanks for your response and empathy- yes she did continue with dialysis - three times a week- it took a lot out of her as she never fared well after a session- plus she had other complications- cancer of the stomach ( which we were unaware of at the time) and also she was suffering internal bleeding too-she had an arm fistula too - it was extremely painful for her children and familiy to see the destruction casued by renal failure- May Allah swt give all mumeen who have this chronic condition the strength and stamina to endure and inshalah I pray for their Shifa Ameen .
If you suffered from kidney failure, will you be willing to pay for a donation, if it did not impact the health of donor?
Would you pay a person for donation to your loved ones if you could not do it yourself?
No, i will never do that. and.. its haram, IMO.
My dad had kidney transplant 5 years ago, and nearly every one in family line up for donation. They have some kind a numbers to match, many relatives went through the screening process and Dad- younger sister got selected.
If i am correct, Musharraf government passed the law to make it illegal to sell any organ !

Renal failure is a silent disease, and you dont find out until its too late. The only way to make sure is have an annual blood/urine test. You should get them every year poppies as renal disease can be hereditary.
I dont know where your mom was but some dialysis centers in Lahore are really bad. Some are unbelievably good too. Dialysis usually lets the patient live a normal life apart from the 3xweek visits but unfortunately your mom had some complications.

yeah and in the process, they also banned receiving an organ.
He could not differentiate between purchasing/selling and donating.
Yes Koozager ur right about the dialysis info- alhamdolilah we are from the Uk so the NHS was excellent alhamdolilah- yes weve all been screened - out of 7 of us 4 have the same hereditary condition- polycystic kidneys- my mamus have died from the same condition and I have my last mamu who is dialysised and my brother is now having the symptoms - its really sad but the options are limited- not a alot you can do with these types of heriditary condiotions.... really appreciate the advice- thanks ...r u a med student???
My mother is currently on dialysis 3 times a week.. all of us have been cross-matched for transplantation but she isn't well enuff for a transplant. Lots of people in India/Pakistan wanted to sell their kidney's.. but both my parents didn't agree.

Gina and Koozager- may Allah swt give you all hounsla and peace inshallah ... it was real hard for all the family- as a daughter it was tough but for my dad it was 100 times worse.. gina ur mum gets her treatment from Twam right?
Where they ban the receiving? I know couple of cases who buy the kidney but couldn't live longer, typical lifespan was 2-3 years, then the-end !
every case is different of course.
they have in effect banned receiving by not introducing a process for donation. Anyways, you only find about these things once you have to face it, so Im sure you dont know about it.

Some social issues involved, majority of conservative class believe its haram to donate while alive or after death. Lack of education also plays a huge role.
I always wonder how Pakistan government able to operate forensics labs in areas like NWFP & Southern Punjab !..
