Pakistan came into existence as being the largest Muslim nation on earth. Alas, within decades, the dream of millions of Muslims started loosing its veracity and integrity. After 25 years to Pakistan, the people of Bengal (then East Pakistan) preferred to move back to their geo-cultural identity rather than an identity based on Muslim ideology a “Pakistani – A person from sacred land”. The remaining Pakistanis are favourably identifying themselves more as Sindhi, Muhajir, Punjabi, Baluchi, Pathan and within these Shia, Sunni, Wahabi and so on but less as Pakistani.
Who is to blame; the political leaders, religious leaders, military rulers, bureaucrats or the people? For the sake of shifting responsibilities, one can blame anyone. However, the fact of the matter is that everyone is found to be more or less accountable for degrading our national character.
I agree completely. I think we should consider ourselves Pakistanis before anything else. To be fair, it is wonderful to celebrate your ethnicity, language, or religion but that should take a back seat to our country. Some might say that how could one put Islam behind Pakistan? For me, Islam begins and ends with Pakistan. Think about it.

Ahem, although my comment on this thread r uncalled for, but just a clarification : shouldn't it be Pakistan begins and ends with Islam. Or is pakistan greater than Islam?

Your right the comment was uncalled for :) but since your not Pakistani I will explain what I mean. Pakistan for us represents the embodiment of Islam in the sense that it is the only place that was created to allow us to be free to practice our religion in our ways. True, there has been a lot of conflicts, difficulties but without Pakistan, we lose our unique way of practicing our faith. So I put Pakistan first (Just like our President) because we know that God forbid Pakistan ceased to be a nation other Muslim countries could care less.
Proud to be a Punjabi from Lahore, Block something, something Town.
Where nationalism ends, progress begins.
I personally (and you may have your own views) give a jack about who is Pakistani and who is not. If you are helping Pakistan in whatever way, you are my hero regardless of where you come from.

Remember that before Islam, nation states existed.
In fact, the Holy Quran explains that nations (tribes etc) were created in order that people may be identified.
It's chicken/egg. Without Pakistan, there would be no Islam on that land. From personal experience, many Arabs see Pakistan as Standard Bearers of Islam, because they see Pakistan as an Islamic nation being buffetted by all sides but still holding its own.
I blame the religious organizations, corrupt leadership (the so called second line of leadership that tookover in Pakistan).
The recent move not to let the PPP form its own Government is also a move perpetrated by the Government that will result in more provincial disharmony.

yes i agree with u? yes pakistan came into existance because of Islam. Islam dont caome into exitence bcoz of Pakistan.
we have no measure for where the Islam is practiced more. so for me Islam came first.
This came from my Pak. Studies teacher and i liked it.
Have u ever thought that what is the binding force between the people of pakistan??
why a person living in punjab has any sympathy for a person living in NWFP. which dont speak his language and his culture is different. The only binding force between us is Islam.
admitt it or not its true. think abt it. all the countries of Europe have almost one culture and speak the same language. the countries where there r differences r now two or more diff countries.
Pakhtuns can never just be "pakistani".This is because Pakhtun are surrounded by punjabees. THe punjabees have been very good in keeping NWFP backward industirally and keeping the education backward and all of this oyu ask why? simple...the punjabees don't Pakhtuns to become powerful becasue if they do they can leave this so called "muslim" state of pakistan...ethniic politics suck!

Religion alone cannot be a binding force. Otherwise all the Gulf countries would have been one. Or Bangladesh would not have gone on a separate path. If you want to take example, you can also see the rainbow nation, i.e. south africa, which is one country despite of a number of culture, race and religions. Or for that matter, why do you think UP and Kerala are bound together. or West Bengal with Rajasthan or a muslim from UP and a Hindu from Tamil Nadu would stand for a nation called India, it is definitely not religion or race or similar culture or language. A nation state is much more than all these things looked at individually.
