I have always wondered the same thing.

I have just promised a convert that I will burn a dvd for her but now i am in serious doubt. I also have a Quran software that i bought but i make copies of it to give to friends, converts, etc. Not sure though.

its illegal to make copies without their permission so it is stealing in a way so I believe yes it is a sin. jHoot 100 bar dohranay sey jhoot hi rahta hai. yeh alag baat hai kai such lagnay lagta hai lekin hota jhoot hai. ssame goes to this situation.

downloading from torrents site is like buying stuff from a thief. Think about it.. why should people who're downloading be punished for what they're doing.. the bittorrent program is legal, torrents sites are running.. all we do is download them, when people upload them as a torrent.

In this situation , thieves are the ones who upload movie/software torrents on torrent sites and buyer are us who download.

I posed this question to a mufti once at a conference. He told me, if you're downloading for personal use (like softwares and what not) then its ok. If you are making money off of the programs then it is haram.

^ can u ask that mufti to further explain it?? because i dont understand this.

its like saying its ok to steal sumthing if u need it but u cant make money out of it. like i mean theft is theft whether u do it for urself or sell that stolen thing to some1 else. if that software is in the market and u have to pay to get it and u get it for free from a torrent then its probably stealing whether u use it urself or do watever wit it.

well i discussing the same thing with another person and he mentioned that same stealing goes for watching videos off Youtube or anyother websites because all of these videos/shows posted violate the copy right law

half the time we are unaware of what sins we are committing

Licence for use is different to copyright. Copyright has the restriction mentioned by Crescent bro. Licence for use which includes movies, with disclaimers for 'unlicenced viewing' is illegal to copy and redistribute even for free it is even illegal to view it oneself, because by doing so it deprives the organisation of the money they would expect for making that product and putting it on the market.
