Will our son be flat feet?

He has started walking since last three months and his walkings seems odd among others infants plus on visual inpection his feet seems flate.

I read one ariticle on internet saying that it is infancy phenomenon and feet arc developes from 4 to 6 years.

I thought I should also consult GS people may be some one have some practical experience, should we bothered for it in his this early age ( 15 months) or wait till his age of 5,6 years.

Hope have knowledgefull replies.

Whats wrong with flat feet? First of all, its genetic condition. I have flat feet... I can walk, run, play sports, etc. So, stop treating it like its some deformity. Your son is fine and he is already walking so you should be thankful.

Since when did gupshup people become your child's doctor that you need to consult the gupshup people?

Re: Will our son be flat feet?

jaan leva, what are you on about?

it does cause problems to do with the posture and back, especially later in life. a lot of back pain conditions are attributed to under or over developed arches.

even western doctors recommend special type of footwear when the child is young, to help them encourage development of an arch.

the current shoe insole market is huge, it wouldn't be if so many people didn't have foot related problems.

on a personal level, i have a slightly dropped arch and if i don't wear trainers with an inbuilt arch when running, i develop a searing pain in my shins after just a few minutes.

Entisar - i don't think you should worry about it yet. maybe consult your doctor when you see him next.

Re: Will our son be flat feet?

I am Flat feet, Army didnt reject me ! To hell with doctors, i have marched, ran(miles n miles),jogged and jumped like crazy during training. I am all fit and fine.

My dad was a flat foot, a retired Army Officer, Nothing happened to him also.

Re: Will our son be flat feet?

I think your son is too young right now but a visit to a pediatric orthopedist won't hurt and will likely give you peace of mind.

Most babies don't develop arches untill much later... you can always get corrective insoles!

He is young right now but if you are worried just talk to to your pediatrician first and then talk to specialist.

Re: Will our son be flat feet?

Stoppit,

No it doesn,t I am fine, no posture issues or deformities that you are describing. I play cricket for 5 hours and don't get these "cramps" in my shins.

Looks like you've got the worst of it... awwwweee come here leme hug you. Life must be tuff for the lil one.

Entisar,

Sing Hakuna Matata! It means have no worries.

Re: Will our son be flat feet?

one of my uncle has got flat feet and he is just fine. if you are worried you can talk with ped but I firmly believe your child will be fine inshaallah !

He will still be OK even with flat feet. My daughter too has a similar problem and her ankles kind of stick out. But she is able to walk and run etc. Her physiotherapist was not too keen on recommennding special shoes except the normal shoes which give some ankle support. But for her flat feet she did recommend that we make her walk on her toes, say a few steps, and then on her heel another few steps. Just do it like a game for few mins in the mornings. It could help develop sligh arch at this age.

I did not talk about deformities, you're the only one calling it that. I'm talking about the relation between posture issues/back problems/leg problems and feet which is medical fact.
It's not always the case with flat feet, as it really depends on the gait (if you have a normal gait then problems are unlikely) and if you over or under pronante. A lot of people who don't have an arch, also over pronate though.

You seem to have some kind of bee in your bonnet about this? Maybe people in Pak have weird superstitions about this? Maybe you were told you have a deformity?

It's completely normal to have under developed arches (a decent proportion of the population do) but it doesn't hurt to develop one and watch out for related problems that might benefit from insoles etc.

Re: Will our son be flat feet?

I have slightly flat feet and the only problem I've ever faced is pain after wearing heels for a while. Try herring orthopedic insoles if your insurance covers it. I think they do in Canada. Anyways, I know lots of people that have flat feet. I never thought it was a "bad" thing until my brother (who has very flat feet) said it's hard for him to play basketball. He's always searching online about it, lol. He's going into the NBA, iA, and even they don't have a problem w/ it. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I was referring to the thread authors concerns and they way he/she started the thread as if it was some sort of deformity.

Why would you have superstitions about not having arch in your feet? Where did you live, sindh? South punjab? How did you come up with such asinine assertion?
