14y/o is a relatively young age to start smoking, but many kids at this age don’t even know how to smoke (properly), and if that is the case, then it won’t be addictive. Usually it takes several months for a person to get decently addicted.

As people have said, there’s a very strong possibility of him getting addicted. Cigarettes are worse than alcohol, but desis don’t tend to take them seriously because it’s not explicitly forbidden in the Quran. I would seriously ask him to reconsider; smoking is not only harmful for him but second hand smoke harms those around him as well.

Alcohol is forbidden because it is intoxicating. Tobacco isn’t. Also, tobacco smoking does not cause dangerous complications in all smokers, a fact that most people are ignorant of. For these reasons, it would be invalid to consider it as forbidden.
