Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

I recently discovered my youngest brother has been smoking with his friends, which has got me really worried. Nobody else in our family smokes so it seems really random and out of the blue.
He says they’ve only just started doing it so I was wondering how long it typically takes to get addicted. If the substances in them are addictive then does it take just one? Or is it more?
I need to convince him to stop but it will be harder if they have a hold on him, so to speak.
Oh and he doesn’t normally become addicted to things with his personality but chemicals/substances could be different, I don’t know.

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

How old is he? If he's over 16 why not just leave him be.. My SO smokes (but v.rarely) and altho I really don't like it it's his decision at the end of the day.. If he's an adult I don't think there's much you can do except give your opinion on why you think it's wrong then hope he listens..

Btw I think during teenage yrs a lot of kids are more likely to be more influenced by their friends/peers than family members so none of his family members smoking was never going to mean he wouldn't take up the habit.. Could be just a phase or could be more long-term, every individual and their situation is different but no, just one or two shouldn't make him addicted..

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

It is very strong possiblity he will be. Sorry to say.

Strong consistent counter measures need to be made. He needs to change his company.

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

Smoking is very dangerously addictive. The longer it takes for you to get him to stop, the more difficult it will become for him to let go off of it. And he will be thankful of you throughout his life if you do make him stop now.

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

He's 14. And even if he was 17, I'd still be highly concerned. He's my brother and I love him, I want to protect him where I can.

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

Just ask him

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

As people have said, there's a very strong possibility of him getting addicted. Cigarettes are worse than alcohol, but desis don't tend to take them seriously because it's not explicitly forbidden in the Quran. I would seriously ask him to reconsider; smoking is not only harmful for him but second hand smoke harms those around him as well.

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

he is 14. why dont you talk to your parent about his smoking issue?

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

14y/o is a relatively young age to start smoking, but many kids at this age don't even know how to smoke (properly), and if that is the case, then it won't be addictive. Usually it takes several months for a person to get decently addicted.

Alcohol is forbidden because it is intoxicating. Tobacco isn't. Also, tobacco smoking does not cause dangerous complications in all smokers, a fact that most people are ignorant of. For these reasons, it would be invalid to consider it as forbidden.

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

Sorry but I disagree. As far as I know, tobacco causes lung cancer in every person, as does second hand smoke. More people die every year from cigarettes than any other drug.

The reason the Quran does not forbid cigarettes is because they were not invented at the time, although the Quran does mention refraining from anything the causes self-harm. Since alcohol is explicitly mentioned, and its effects are more immediate, our society considers it the be all, end all, of harmful drugs.

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

Tell his teacher that he has started to smoke and that you disapprove and that his friends are doing it with him ...

Tell his friends that you will tell their parents that they are smoking

Tell your own parents about his problem

Buy some good videos on the side effects and problems related to smoking and subject him to them - his young age of 14 will hopefully allow him to see reason clearer than say 17 plus ... Do something now until its too late ...

Re: Will my bro be addicted to cigs?

You don't know much, apparently.
My dad smoked when he was young - no lung cancer.
My brother smoked for many years - no lung cancer.
I smoked for many years - no lung cancer.
My neighbor's father has been smoking for 55 years - no lung cancer!
In fact, smokers have bigger things to be worried about than lung cancer. The number of people who actually die from smoking is less than half of the total number of smokers, at least where I live. The ones who do die are those that are heavily addicted and have been smoking for decades. Do your research more thoroughly!
