I rarely use turmeric in cooking, so I’m curious about this. I recently came across a recipe that asks for wild turmeric. Is there a difference? If so, what is the difference. Will regular turmeric work just as well?
Re: Wild turmeric vs “regular” turmeric?
The regular turmeric should work fine.
the difference that I am aware of is just the different kind of plants that its obtained from. The regular turmeric is strong in colour and fragrant. Its mostly home grown plants .
The wild one, is obtained from the root and isnt as strongly colored as the regular one. its used in most of the medicine or indian “kara”
But for the day to day cooking regular one is absolutely fine and much preferred

Re: Wild turmeric vs “regular” turmeric?
mez jon, what dish is the recipe for? wild turmeric is prized in india because it is the “haldi” of choice for ubtan ceremonies. its a mellower shade of yellow and doesnt make the girl look florescent skinned as is the case with regular turmeric. never seen it used in cooking.

It’s a Thai dish. It’s fish baked in banana leaves with coconut rice.
