Wikipedia and Women

So turns out less than 13% of the contributors on Wikipedia are women. Everyone has their own view as to why this is so… I’m wondering if you guys can shed some light on this stark gender gap.

Oh and Wikipedia’s goal is to get this up to 25% by 2015! lol

Re: Wikipedia and Women

Maybe because behind every successful wikipedia contributor their is a woman. They might be helping their male relatives in their contribution and don't want to take the credit themselves.

Re: Wikipedia and Women

:hehe: Good!

Oh before I forget, the source of the news is NPR, heard it on the radio 2-3 days ago.

To get more women to contribute, just add the prefix, “A Man said…”, before all Wikipedia articles.

Re: Wikipedia and Women

it’s the quality that matters not quantity :snooty:

Re: Wikipedia and Women

Hmm, that's interesting. I know I use Wikipedia quite a bit, haven't contributed though...cuz I haven't really thought about doing so.

I remember learning in a few of my education courses that males tend to gravitate more toward literature that is non-fiction whereas women are more into the fiction. Now this refers to reading (and I know that there are exceptions to the generalization) but reading and writing are connected. So, I wonder if this could have any connection at all to the Wikipedia figures. For example, since men are more into non-fiction....are they better able to process and contribute factual/objective information compared to women?

And also some fields/professions are more male dominated than others.......could that also be a reason why more men than women are contributing information about a particular topic? It would also be interesting to know which kinds of topics the less than 13% of women are contributing to? What are they about...are they more objective or subjective, etc?

Re: Wikipedia and Women

Well that's interesting, it's pretty much the opposite for me. I only read non-fiction when I have to or when it's highly recommended by someone.

Re: Wikipedia and Women

In all of my years of schooling, Wikipedia was always known to be the least reliable source.. not surprised that men are the top contributors :p

Re: Wikipedia and Women

you people read??

Re: Wikipedia and Women

I know right… :hoonh:

Re: Wikipedia and Women

They lack enough brain cells to write something productive. This is not just limited to Wikipedia, it's in every field. Women sucks when it comes to thought process or doing something productive for mankind.

According to research, women naturally lacks certain genetics which are directly interlinked with brain cells - because of this their brain is little and empty then compare to men.

Re: Wikipedia and Women

dunno about that but one of my brain cells died after reading this

Re: Wikipedia and Women

that must be your only brain cell, :teary2:
