According to Pakistani law, if a man marries the second time without the wife's permission, he can go to jail for 6 months. I have seen a wife threaten her husband with thus after he was not treating both his wives with justice and he became a bit nicer to the first wife.

People should be alarmed. You can look at it as a commentary on women's rights...or...
You can see that this is how "worth it" these people think of your daughters. :) Clearly, they don't give a crap if your daughter gets wronged in the future.

Think that is what this fatwa is about. They are saying, the requirement of getting wife's permission is 'un-islamic'. This is what muftis do: Muft mein khana, fatway dena.

I just don't get it. Don't they know the story of how The Prophet (SAW) was upset about his son-in-law Ali (R) getting a proposal from some other family when he was married to Fatima (R), and asked that Ali (R) not take any other rishtas and break his daughter's heart?
Where does sunnah go then? Out the window apparently when it comes to the genital needs of desi men I guess.

The fatwa doesn't have to amount to a law. Moulvis have been talking about this particular requirement as being unislamic for decades now. Also, what they have tried to change us another law. According to Pakistani law, a verbal divorce is not enough to end the marriage. You need to get it documented properly and filed with the Union Council. This was for the protection of the woman as well because if a verbal one was enough, a man could later go back on his statement saying he did not divorce her.
Downside ? women who don't know about the law get remarried after a verbal divorce and get put into prison for getting married again without a divorce when vindictive ex husbands complain about them to the police. Many women are languishing in jail because of this.
Mullahs have been using the above and saying that a verbal divorce should be enough, witness or no witness.
