What do you mean "its the fitrah of man, to marry more than once"??? Sounds more like a fitnah, than fitrah.

by fitrah i meant, that a man is never really satisfied with one woman in his life. Hence more than one woman are needed, and to prevent extra marital affairs Islam allowed polygamy.

How is it supposed to be a fitnah, when Islam allowed it..and when the Prophet and the Companions themselves practiced it?

I do agree, however, that a man marrying multiple times is permissible. The justice part of the ayat is explained as treating all wives fairly and the amount of time spent with them, plus monies should be distributed evenly. The part which talks about "you can not do justice" is explained to mean, emotions and attraction, which can't be evenly distributed, and that is ok too. People marry multiple times for various reasons: to support widows, war-widows, orphans, divorcees or whatever. I am not going to go into the rationale as this is a personal decision for many people.

But to turn it all around to suggest that it is a man's natural disposition not to be satisfied with just one woman is horribly inaccurate. Not all men are the same. If someone can not control his libido thats his problem.

of course, like all rules there are exceptions...and that there is never one rule that applies to the entire population. But its apparent that the rule does apply to a great majority of men, and this is proven by the great number of extra marital affairs we get to see especially in societies where polygamy is forbidden.

^ Extra marital affairs are not because people can't keep it in their pants, but its more because of their misunderstandings with partner, marriage makes you stay with her legally and be responsible for everything but "extra" affair doesn't demand any legal obligations.... There is so much more to "extra marital affairs" but libido.

Misunderstanding is not just about one issue, I used it as an umbrella term to in clude “mistreatment” or “expected treatment not fulfilled” type issues… issues like one spouse not giving “time” to the other, getting irritated due to some behavior. There are lots of factors which contribute in different person’s mind when they go off towards extra-marital affairs. You can just watch Jerry Springer show to get an idea :CareBear:

In most honour killings...the accused is the victum. Even just talking to some guy is labeled as an affair. When was the last time a guy was stoned to death becuz he had an affair.

Hey maybe there is a parallel universe out there, where societies evolved to be female-dominated, where such things do happen.

For centruries, woman has been made to look like an emotional animal who “can’t” handle things. I am sorry to say that but its all BS. A woman is much more capable of doing what these morons do having 2nd, 3rd and 4rth marriage. It’s a matter of respect for your marriage and your husband that a desi woman can’t think of being with someone else. But unfrotunately all man here do

Oh please, people will be all talk. When it comes down to really living up to their Islamic ability to have 2+ wives, they wont do it. I opened a thread asking if people would be willing to marry the widows that resulted from the earthquake in Pakistan, and there were no takers. Check that thread. Some of these pro-polygamy people posted in that thread too. Interesting how things change when people are faced with reality.

There was a battle of Uhud in which the Muslims not only had lost badly against the Pagans, but also suffered a dramatic decrease in the number of Muslim men. After that there were several battles in Mecca against the Pagan, Christians and Jews. Muslim did win some of those battles but the continuous battles did have an effect on the Muslim community, especailly men. The Muslim women had to be taken care of. The Noble verse 4:3 was revealed to Prophet Muhammad :saw: in Medina where Allah Allmighty set a conditional clause for Orphans:

“If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans…(4:3).”

The purpose of having multiple wives is not for men’s personal ego, sexual pleasure or to show off rather than to solve major societal issues like prostitution and/or illegal sex. Having multiple wives is not encouraged in Islam or Qura’n.

Let’s just look at the whole verse:

***“If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice. 4:3” ***

Most people believe it is money but at the time this verse was revealed to Prophet Muhammad :saw:, he along with his friends or fellow Muslims were not so rich, also they were travelling, spreading Islam, trading and fighting battles too. So the point is if you believe that your life will be complete and you can take care of the new wife in a way that your present family won’t suffer in any way than I believe it is allowed.

Thank you for detailed info, I have read about those wars and conditions, thank you for confirming that the reasons are the same as my own understanding of the issue. If you read posts after the one you replied to, you’ll find that I and some other guppies believe the same i.e. justly is the key not just money.

If given an oppurtunity everyone will like having sex with multiple partners.. look what happens in the west.. girls like to have many sexual partners.. so do guys.. its kinda evenly balanced. One of my ex-colleagues had kids by almost nationalities.. while she was caucasian.. her kids were half-african, half-asian, half-mexican and one complete white by different boyfriends..- they even didnt look 1/2-brothers- well, thats unique but I think most of the time motivation for 2+ marriages could be sex. You frequently see in the news bout good ol' arabs having 16-20 wives.. cuz they have many and they are horny in the hot sand.

marrying multiple women due to wars isnt a valid argument anymore... so why bother with ancient history? arabs live in whorehouses with fistfull of dollars. the reason they marry them is to make it islamic somhow.

Whether he did right or wrong in taking the fourth wife and the manner he did it is debatable. I am no alim to express opinion. But did he deserve die for that?
