Why?

Why majority follows a ‘formal religion’ in this world?

Re: Why?

Scientist have proved we are hard wired for religion.
Here is the proof of what I say:

Enough said. :snooty:

Re: Why?

Good read.

So there are ‘possible’ anatomical, physical, psychological reasons to be religious.

It is said religion is a form of mass delusion. Is that true also?

Re: Why?

Not as per this research.

Re: Why?

You are right. These observations do not make the notion that "religion is a form of mass delusion" correct.

I am not ready to buy these "researches" yet but interesting read.

For the argument sake if we believe on these researches then we cannot help but follow a formed religion based on some physical or anatomical structures of our brain. .

See, the first and the third link of yours describes the effect on brain scan from people when they are engaged in religious thoughts.
And they claimed that there must be some God Neurons and Neurotransmitters.

So it is some indirect way of trying to prove "something exists". But that is based on the effect on brain from relgious emotions, rather an active brain area which 'forces' people to believe in a religion.

This counter argument is also included in third link.

Sorry, I could not read the detail in second link. It requires subscription.

Re: Why?

Well I always knew I had no choice in matters of faith... Follow blindly. :)

Re: Why?

Without considering the 'faith' elements of religion, i.e. those aspects that requrie belief in unseen. Religion makes sense. It is a library of learning experiences, catalogue of wisdoms and insights and best practices.

The phenomenon can be strewn from the philosophical construct:
To learn from ones own experiences is intelligence, to learn from the experiences of others is wisdom.

Anti-religious people often focus on the esoteric and unfamilar territory to defame religion, but religion is the most effective means to achieve the above and science hence is a part of religion or rather religion requires science to keep it structured and formal.

Science follows the cycle stages of Act, Think, Test, Learn and that is what makes religion structured as well.

This was all background:

The reason why we choose formal religion is because

a) We have a strong sense to trust the research of others especially when it is presented in a convincing manner
b) We are naturally inclined as humans to take the path of least resistance and find it sensible or innate that in all this time and with all these people following a given way it should have some merit to follow:
c) The sense to belong - it is our clan affiliation tendencies that can drive us to this as well. Very few are risky enough to consider being different with regards to faith.

Re: Why?

why do most people shop brand apparel?

Re: Why?

Yes there are some parts of every religion (metaphysical) which really make no 'logical sense' and those are followed blindly. Still core issue of religions deal with some sense.

The bold part of the post is very nicely put.

Now the rest is agreed to some extent but needs clarification. Sounds like following a formed religion is like giving in to the requirement placed upon us so we do not get in 'trouble'.

Agreeing with others who presented the 'research', choosing the the path of least resistance, clan affiliation tendencies etc. makes religious people look like they are just following a formed religion out of convenience.

Other name for clan affiliation tendency is "Herd Mentality".

You mean, whoever advertises with big money, gets more people to get attracted
OR
it could be that formal religions do have something 'better' to offer like the brand items and other ideas are just 'jaali maal' , 'charba' (imitation)?
