Please tell me why Muharram is supposed to be a month of sadness or mourning? This is in reference to removal of the word “Happiness” from the banner. refrain from stating the obvious.
Re: Why?
One word: Karbala
Re: Why?
But when, why and who started it as a month of mourning? It was not the case during the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) nor it was the case during the 4 Caliphs. Infact after the death of Prophet Muhammad (saw) the Sahabi's or the Caliphs never stated that the month of Rabi al-Awwal should be considered as the month of mourning since Prophet Muhammad (saw) died in that month.
Its a sincere question.
Re: Why?
hmm good question.. i have wondered about it as well.. this is our new year .. too many self-made restrictions in this month..
Re: Why?
This is not really an issue.
If soneone wants to mourn he should if someone does not he shudn't. Whats teh big deal?
Re: Why?

According to Islam mourning is not permissible after three days. You may have very long days, but where I live it happened more than a thousand years ago.
Now, the admins and the GS karta dhartas have to come out state why they choose to remove the word to make some people happy who are involved in non islamic activity to begin with.

I never said its right, just giving the reason as we see it today.
Re: Why?
Br. Teaser
Agree with you. The Prophet SAW never announced morning days either for any of the previous prophets. Its OK to re-emphasize history from an academic POV but I don’t see the merit of it in our lives today from a religious perspective.
Re: Why?
People all across the world have rituals, customs etc etc. As long as they are not harmful or insulting to others, i don't think we shud bother.
Lets show some tolerance to our minority groups.
Just my 2 cents.
Re: Why?
i think it is one of the sacred months. (and i think there are four of them. i took this info from Surah Tauba)
May ALLAH SWT forgive me if i am wrong. ![]()
Re: Why?
I think its a month of mourning because of how the Caliphs and their families died..i.e. they were all tortured by yazeed and his men, men women and children of all ages were not given even a drop of water and then forced to fight plus the Caliphs and Bibis or should i say that it was the end of Caliphate phase...so thats why people mourn which is alright but shia's rather take it seriously and tourture themselves and my uncle is a shia so he once said it earns them sawab etc..i have been to so many Majlis as well where they usually say negative stuff about sunnis whenever possible then telling the story :S
Re: Why?
^ There is also an element of romanticism and exeggeration in the story IMO... I wouldn't take it at face value.
Re: Why?
Again, mourning is permissible for 3 days. So there is no point in extending it all the way to 1429 H.
It is funny that these people say negative stuff about Sunni’s and they were the primary group of people who failed to aid the family of Muhammad:saw:.
Re: Why?
if u say something like tht abt bhutto..then i can understand..
but this is prophet's grandson and his family tht ur talking abt..
how can you even compare his family with the rest of the people???
i dont see u complaining abt why we celebrate eid even after soo many yrs..
again if u want it to be a HAPPY new yr..the choice is really yours..stop creating a scene.
I wanted someone else to answer you..because i am not good with explaining things..
Re: Why?
Yes it is a sacred month but still not to mourn. Kaleem is right in saying that Islam only tells us to mourn for 3 days, so i don’t understand people wearing all black, not listening to music etc in Muharram (when they still do all that in Ramadhan, i’ve seen many myself).. excluding wearing black and mourning, shouldn’t we do these things like not listening to music otherwise too?

I see you have answered just like your name. Again, Islam is not badshahat and Prophet's family does not have the rights to Islam we all as muslims do. Now, Islam only allows three days of mourning, what part of this do you not understand. I will not even attempt to address your Eid part because it does not require an answer.
Re: Why?
I agree with all your posts Kaleem....I myself often wonder if it is only permissible to mourn for 3 days then why do people continue to do so thereafter is beyond me. Religious differences perhaps?
Getting back to the admins decision to remove the "Happy Islamic New Year" banner....the way i see it.... if keeping or removing the word "happy" doesnt upset the majority either way but does upset the minority then it should be removed. This way EVERYONE is happy.
Re: Why?
When I was in Pakistan around 11/12 yrs old, I had mehendi done on my hands during this month and went out to bazaar. I was on the bus and got angry stares from women who were wearing black...I guess they were not happy to see that :(
Re: Why?
my mother said how we’re not supposed to do any “happy things” in the first 10 days of muharram but I was utterly confused because we’re not shia ![]()

You may not be good in explaining but maybe good in understanding...inshAllah.
The year concept did not existed during the time of Muhammad (saw). In those days they only had the names of the Month but they never counted the year that how many years it has been passed and so on. It started during the time of Hazrat Usman (ra) Cilapha time.
When Hazrat Usman (ra) saw the need that there should a track of the years that has been passed he called his shura to discuss how they should do this and what should be the first month of the year. By the way this all happen due to a dispute on a contract which had the mentioning of the month but not the year so they could not figure out if the contract between 2 parties has ended or should continue.
Anyway so the shura sat down to decide what should be the first month of the year and so on. They decided not use Rabi al-Awwal as that was month in which Prophet Muhammad (saw) passed away and it brings bad memories and it could lead to a fitna. They also decided not use Al Haj as the first month of the year due to the fact its the month of the Haj where people are busy doing Haj and when Haj is over people come back to their places and rest after long journeys and so on. They decided to start the new year with Muharram and that was something which Prophet Muhammad (saw) have had expressed as well during his time. So thats how we have the Hijri calendar started and keep track of our dates and history.
If you read the bold part in my post that shows the reason why Sahaba's try to avoid the month in which Prophet Muhammad (saw) passed away. I don't think we are better Muslims than the Sahaba's to able to say that the reason we mourn in Muharram to show love the family of Prophet Muhammad (saw). I hope this make some sence. :)
USResident: Walaikum Aslam and thanks for your reply. :)
