Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

He wasn’t even a Pakistani. Pakistanis have been handing over Alqaeda’s No 2s and No 3s to USA for a decade now. Even his own country and family is not willing to take him dead or alive.

What would’ve Pakistan gained from protecting Osama instead of handing him over to USA or killing him?

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

On the other hand, for 25 million dollars anybody would have snitched against him.

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

I think the answer is obvious. Pakistan simply wasn't hiding him...he was hiding in Pakistan. There is a vast difference between these two positions.

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

Ditto

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

Pakistan as a whole does not benefit from hiding OBL. But a section of your govt and/or military (including parts of ISI) are ideologically supportive of terrorists and OBL is the biggest of them all. That is why.

It was not Pakistan but some Pakistanis who were hiding OBL. No matter how idiotic our govt is, they would have no interest in harboring OBL.

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

But I am trying to view the scenario from the mind those who say Pakistan was hiding him. What reason would they have to make them believe that?

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

Trust deficit - They don’t trust us fully because of rogue elements within our government and military/intelligence apparatus who are:

  • not ideological sympathisers of Al-Qaeda/OBL but wanted to use OBL as a bargaining chip (best case scenario) or
  • ideological sympathizers that were protecting OBL from the Americans (worst case scenario)

and we don’t trust them fully…zore ‘fully’ par hai

Pakistan did its part
By Asif Ali Zardari, Published: May 2
http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/pakistan-did-its-part/2011/05/02/AFHxmybF_story.html

The following comment in the article sums it up:

“Considering how unreliable or untrustworthy the Paki officials are, I suppose Zardari could legitimately claim that Pakistan did its part, in this operation, by just staying back and doing nothing. Otherwise, Paki involvement would almost surely have botched it up or tipped OBL to escape, again, before the SEALs infiltrated his compound. So, yes, I guess you did publicly deserve that much token appreciation by Obama, after the operation by purely Americans was successful.”

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

Let be honest people after the rallies of support for Osama Bin Laden in Quetta/Peshawar/Karachi and other parts of Pakistan, do you guys still believe these talibanic/al-qaeda *******s don't enjoy support among pretty hefty count of population?

Our very fabric of society is infected with this talibanic-disease, our military is incapable and like a small cat in front of Large bear. But still out security establishment didn't let go the polices of supporting these walking zombies.

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

You know what's sad? Pathetic, even? When push comes to shove and pakistan faces a real threat, it will be these types that stand up and defend the nation no matter the cost...meanwhile, the very expensive army will probably turn tail and run...

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

He was playing hide-and-seek together with Bush en Obama :D in Pakistan (joke of the century btw) :D
But unfortunately Obama won.

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

**US doesn’t trust ‘ally’ Pakistan **

‘keeping a ‘diplomat’ (a reference to RD) for 42 days’

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

cuz america wants you to believe this, you would?! come’on

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

i don’t believe it hence put it in brackets

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

if this is for me, i wasnt even talking about you. lols. it was a general comment to the topic line.

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

I always suspected that the best hiding place for OBL would be right under everyones noses.

Everyone is looking for him in the tribal areas, but who would suspect him hiding right next door!

They military academy might not be far away, but so what? Is it the academies job to look for OBL?

There saying how could anyone miss a mansion being built for OBL?!?! People build large houses everywhere in Pak... Why would anyone suspect a mansion being built in the neighborhood is for OBL?

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

OBL and Taliban are not synonymous. People support OBL, because he is this larger then life Robin Hood figure to them. However deluded this outlook is, many people in the Muslim world have this image of him.

The Taliban in polling have been shown to have less of a favorable reputation.
http://blogs.reuters.com/faithworld/2009/07/01/poll-pakistanis-against-taliban-disagree-over-sharia-views/

OBL is popular because he isnt seen as an enemy of Pakistan or the Muslim world as the Taliban are. He is seen as a person fighting the US, which already is unpopular.

Pakistans Army certainly has the capacity to take the Taliban on and defeat them, as they have shown in Swat, and to an extent South Waziristan. The reason they havent wiped them out is because they always leave tem a safe haven to scurry of to.

Pakistan is looking at its long term strategy. Agree or disagree, te concern in Pak is that once the US leaves, they will be surrounded by enemies on both sides. They are trying to assure their own interests by preventing a hostile govt in Afghanistan that can facilitate India’s antagonistic policies against Pak.

I dont necessarily agree with their strategy, nor do I support the Taliban or Islamic extremists, but I understand the motivation behind Paks double game here. Its a very precarious position to be in.

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

First see and then believe. Where is the evidence, why is US waiting?
If they have nothing to hide then what is the problem? Kis ka intezaar hai?

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

So OBL becomes separate from the actions of alqaeda? US would have loved that vis Bush after 2003.

Re: Why would Pakistan hide Bin Laden?

WASHINGTON: There is no evidence Pakistani officials knew Osama bin Laden was living at a compound deep inside the country, but the United States is not ruling out the possibility, President Barack Obama’s counterterrorism adviser said on Tuesday.

They (Pakistani officials) are expressing as great a surprise as we had when we first learned about this compound, so there is no indication at this point that the people we have talked to were aware of this, but we need to dig deeper into this,” White House counterterrorism chief John Brennan said in an interview with National Public Radio.
