WASHINGTON President George W. Bush has refused to declassify a 28-page chapter of a congressional report on the Sept. 11 attacks. He said that disclosure of the deleted section, which centers on allegations of Saudi Arabia’s role in financing the hijackings, “would help the enemy” and compromise the administration’s global war against terror. ![]()
The report was denounced by Saudi foreign minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, as an “outrage” that “wrongly and morbidly” accused Saudi Arabia of complicity in the attacks.
White House won’t declassify Saudi 9/11 report?
Some people have said one reason is Bush wanted to protect the Saudi royal family. This explanation is flawed because of the following reasons. Firstly the American media has already alluded to the contents of the report and has named Omar al-Bayoumi and members of the royal family providing support and money to finance the high jacking operations. Secondly, by not declassifying the report the Saudis strongly feel that White House is doing little to protect them.
Another reason cited by political analysts is that the Bush administration wants to use the report to make the Saudis more compliant to US demands against the war on terror.
However, on close examination this explanation is too weak to be true. Since September 11, the role played by the Saudi high jackers has been under intense media scrutiny. The US administration has successfully manipulated this to pressurise the Saudis to comply with US demands. Furthermore, the May 12 bombings of the housing complex in Riyadh have paved the way for American intelligence officials to be granted full access to intelligence information and total co-operation of the Saudi officials.
**Perhaps the reason that is closer to the truth is that the Bush administration fears that some aspects of the classified report, if declassified would point towards US involvement in the events of September 11. On the 28th of July, Bush alluded to this point when he said, “It makes no sense to declassify when we’ve got an ongoing investigation. That could jeopardise that investigation. And it made no sense to declassify … during the war on terror, because it would help the enemy if they knew our sources and methods.”
It is known fact the US companies such as Vinnell, owned by the Carlyle Group (which has long-time ties to the Bush Family), BDM, Booz-Allen Hamilton, Shea and Gardne, Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld,Kroll O’Gara Hess and Eisenhardt etc have been extensively involved with Saudi nationals in military training, construction, intelligence gathering etc and other services which if brought to the public eye may be very damaging to the Bush administration.**
