Wine was declared haraam because in the 7 th century the quality of wine made was atrocious. It was probably killing people rather than just making them behosh.
Wine making is still not a perfect science. 7% all wine bottled turns bad due to bad corks so imagine what must be the situation at the time of the Prophet (SAWS).
Having said that today a bottle of Chateau Lafite Rothsild 1952 would not be considered haraam.

It's a very well known understanding of all muslims throughout the world since 14 centuries that any medicine regardless of it's ingredients is allowed if it is used for a cure of disease. There was no need for such question; however, good question for those who did not know.

You will be surprised to know that many highly parhay likhay muslims don't ever take or give their kids any medicine that includes alcohol. I say, more power to them. Its obviously a big issue for them.

All men are by nature equal and equally endowed with the faculty of reason that must not be disparaged in favour of blind faith
Everyone wants alcohol because of it's great pleasure (regardless whether it gives a big buzz or damages the health).. but Allah Almighty wants us to sacrifice this pleasue for a few days and in return people can have a river of alcohol in the Heavens.
That heavenley alcohol will be pure meaning it will not intoxicate the body, so people could drin it as much as they liked to.
The important thing is that, it is a trial.
If a person could live a century, that's only 36,525 days.. obvously not long enough to worry about little things like alcohol. So just control your desires temporarily and one will be rewarded.
