Leaving aside the psychological phenomenons which are instrumental in it, one thing above all is their very weak or non existant connection with Allah. They don't respect life or their bods as gifts from Allah.
In absence of an outlet in form of venting out the emotions some chose to take it out on themselves. And some psycho freaks, they consider it cool. And some have brutal, merciless nature but such freaks are found in west IMO.
