There are still some places in the world where individuality and ethnicity is considered to be a valuable asset.
North America seems to be losing this mentality. As newer generations rise to the position of being able to influence society we seem to be moving away from the “different = special = valuable” equation.
Why? And is this a progressive change for the better?
Though I’m not as familiar with North American culture as yourself I certainly don’t get the same impression when viewing North American society from the UK. I thought American society is divided along racial and regional lines, has this now changed ? Does an American from Alabama not view himself differently from a resident of Boston ? Can I still walk the streets of Bensonhurst without getting shot and stabbed by a mob of Italian Americans ? How non Afro Americans moved into Queens or Brooklyn ?
In the UK we’re still divided along regional, racial and social classes. When competing in sport I think we’re a long way from sending a UK team, we still send Scotland, England and Wales as seperate teams.
I wish we could remove the divisions but it’s unlikely to happen in the near future.
Initially it was the whole PC thing gone haywire that fueled this bandwagon of assimilation and all :)we aint borg afterall ya know. Basically you can celebrate your identity and culture as long as you have been previously deemed a deviant and scorned, thus the whole gay'lesb chic appeal especially around colleges. If you are more mainstream and proud of who you are and what you are, then ummmm dunn celebrate it dunn follow it etc. A lot of it is only a surface observation though, mentalities and prejudices remain and just get hidden due to lack of popular support openly. It seemed this way back in the hippie days too, but did it have lasting power? Not according to my observations.
