Can anyone tell me the significance of going to Syria for Shias?
A collegue of mine who is Shia just went for 3 weeks. I have seen that at least once in their life time they do pay a visit there. Can anyone tell me why?

Re: why Syria

Re: why Syria
From what I have heard there are really good universities in Islamic studies over there. I have always wanted to go and I am not even shia, well I am a muslim.
Re: why Syria
I would have but I don't really know him well...we usually don't talk about religion stuff at work. :)
Re: why Syria
my parents went to syria this year..there were so many people from all over the world..it was so crowded that she couldnt find her friend from the US..Bibi Zainab a.s. (sis of Imam Hussain a.s.) and Bibi Sakina a.s. (daughter of Imam Hussain a.s.) are burried there..people mostly visit shaam during the chehlum (40th) of Imam Hussain a.s.
Re: why Syria
Shia play only a minor role in Syrian politics. They are among the least educated religious groups, and their members are more resistant to change. In religious affairs, they look to Shia centers in Iraq, especially Karbala and An Najaf, and to Iran. However, Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, and Syria's alliance with Iran in its war with Iraq, have elevated the prestige of Syria's Shia minority. As hundreds of Iranian tourists began to visit Damascus each week, the Shia shrine of the tomb of Sitt az Zaynab, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, located in Al Ghutah outside Damascus, became a major pilgrimage destination, replacing those areas no longer accessible in Iraq.
Re: why Syria
Thank you for your input everyone.
So just wondering how long does it last. Is it just like a short visit like we do to prophet mohammad(pbuh) in Madina which is mostly a glimps (i think no fatiha becuz of the strick saudi rules). Or is it like full flash mourning for days at the graves?
Re: why Syria
Syria is a beautiful country all shias, sunnies and other sects must go to syria.
And we must pray for the Myrters burried in Syria.
Re: why Syria
Its not a wajib ritual, you visit the different shrines and read dua/ziyarat. At arabeen its a whole different atmosphere however, where its packed to the brim with people and you stay the whole night listening to majalises, reading duas etc.. But otherwise they are pretty much short visits.
anyways, ill be going there myself soon, will let you know how it goes.
Re: why Syria
thats great Ma Mooli :). Sorry what's arabeen?
