Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

Firstly, ofcourse, that US team kinda sucked in the World Cup, but even if they had done well, here are a few reasons why soccer/futbol won’t replace American Football or even basketball for the American fans…

  1. Unless you enjoy passing and dribbling, the game is as boring as watching paint dry. They play for 90 minutes and in those 90 minutes there are may be two goals. And that is if you are lucky. Plus there will be about five other credible shots on the goal. The rest of the time is spent in midfield by players passing and dribbling, and kicking the ball over the heads of everyone else … Yawn…

  2. There is no sense of time. Game is played for 90 minutes, and then arbitrarily they add 3-5 minutes of stoppage time. What the heck! Would it kill them to stop the clock, whenever there is a stoppage in the play, so that people know exactly how much actual time is left? Imagine doing that in NBA, where every friggin’ second is important, or American football. But then, you can excuse this, because if there are only two goals in a game anyway, who cares about 3-5 minutes extra.

  3. The game is so darn cheap. All you need is a ball, and you are ready to go. Come on… This is so third world’y. Economic superpowers should play more expensive games, like golf, baseball, tennis etc.

  4. There are no breaks in the game, except half time. You can’t find sponsors when there is no break in between. May be if they stop the game for 3 minutes every time there is a foul, then may be, networks can find more sponsors for this game.

  5. And anyone who thinks that since soccer is popular in Europe (and Africa, and Asia and South America and pretty much rest of the world) so it will become popular in the US, is dreaming. US always has its own dairh eent ki masjid, and just like metric system, will not adopt a sport just to conform.

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

I have to disagree with most of yours points. Your first point is somewhat correct, since most casual soccer viewers don't find anything but goals entertaining, whereas as a fan who knows anything about soccer will learn to appreciate the style of play on the field. Goals are secondary, unless ofcourse your team is playing. Your second point is outrageous. A baseball game can go on for a much longer or a shorter time than the 3 hours that are usually alloted to a baseball game. Same with a basketball game. There might be 3 seconds left on clock but it can actually become more than half an hour due to timeouts and everything. And a 20 second time out is seldom 20 seconds long.

As for your third point, basketball isn't exactly a king's sport either. Besides, soccer is extremely popular in western europe too and you'd be hard pressed to find a third world country there.

Your fourth point may or may not be correct, since I'm sure networks around the world love corporate sponsorhips just as much as their American counterparts. And as for your last point, there isn't really much to dispute there.

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

Baseball has no time alloted to it. To my knowledge baseball may be the only organized team sport that has no concept of time. So comparison with baseball is irrelevant. In Basketball, every second is precious. Everytime there is a foul or timeout, the clock is stopped. So at any moment, both the players and spectators know exactly how many minutes and seconds of playing time is left. Not so with futbol.

Third point was more tongue in cheeck, and seems you missed it :p

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won’t be popular in the US?

i don’t know that the US will ever love soccer as much as the rest of the world, and you’re right about that last part about us :cb:

we are very dheit

ah well, whether or not it becomes nationally exciting on a pro level

i still love my soccer boys

as long as we can play against our own teams and claim to be 'world campions' we are okay, even if it means we go to things liek world baseball classic and then get smacked around by some tiny third world country. the ego just can not handle it.

1. Unless you enjoy passing and dribbling, the game is as boring as watching paint dry. They play for 90 minutes and in those 90 minutes there are may be two goals. And that is if you are lucky. Yawn....

its not just scoring, but also the build up to get to score, the quality of play. I mean its like a good drama or mystery movie, u have to enjoy the buld up to get to the finale. not like some bang bang action movie with punches thrown in every scene or a porno with boom boom every minute..

american sports are like american sex, all about scoring, the build up and foreplay is not a strong point and thus discarded.

*2. There is no sense of time. Game is played for 90 minutes, and then arbitrarily they add 3-5 minutes of stoppage time. What the heck! atleast for viewers when you are watching, if it says 30 mins left u know it is actual 30 mins plus a handful of mins for injury time, unlike basketball or american football where 15 mins can mean 25 mins or 1 hour respectively.

**
3. The game is so darn cheap. All you need is a ball, and you are ready to go. Come on... This is so third world'y. Economic superpowers should play more expensive games, like golf, baseball, tennis etc. **

all u need is a ball? abay, its not played like you played with half nangay bacchay in your slum in lahore with no shoes...

if there were breaks after every play or after every foul, football players would look just like american football players, fat and out of shape.

5. And anyone who thinks that since soccer is popular in Europe (and Africa, and Asia and South America and pretty much rest of the world) so it will become popular in the US, is dreaming. US always has its own dairh eent ki masjid, and just like metric system, will not adopt a sport just to conform.

..or play a sport in which sme third world team can kick the us team's butt, reminds me of US men's field hockey team which lost to India 22-0 and then the team was disbanded, that record of a smack bottom existed until pakistan abused macao's team on the field by destroying them 50 something to zero.

get on the damn field, put in an honest 90 mins unless you are one of the handful of subs and that is it, none of this a whole new group of jokers showing up for one play here and one play there. team na ho gayee qabeela ho gaya.

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won’t be popular in the US?

tongue in butt cheek is more like it

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

Baseball is the most boring sport in the world waisay, not football.

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

For starters they have got to call it football instead of soccer :p

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

I dun really care if soccer is popular in amreeka or not, we have got football here which is much more entertaining, tho im sure all of you here will disagree ::P

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won’t be popular in the US?

If only you realize how the world laughs when you call the Superbowl winners “The World Champions” :o .

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won’t be popular in the US?

:rotfl: :rotfl:

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won’t be popular in the US?

not as entertaining as rugby, where they dont need pads and helmets like american football pansies, and the entire group on the field does not go take a vacation after a play. now that is a sport.

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

Foot ball(soccer) is just doing fine it doesn't need fat a@# US viewer's approval.

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won’t be popular in the US?

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

Sports became entertainment in America long time ago. Unlike most other sports, football matches don't stop for timeouts (cheerleaders) and commercials and what not. Other than that brief 15 minute period of half time, the clock continues to tick and tick.

The World Cup brings international unity to a level that politicians could only dream of.

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

Well, to be honest, I thought all your points were a bit tongue in cheek but than that would be spamming, and we all know how much you hate spamming :)

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

Actually yes. :)And what's the link between tongue in cheek and spamming?

Re: Why Soccer/Futbol won't be popular in the US?

Because if all the points are tongue in cheek, that would mean there is no point in discussing anything at all. Such a thread would most definitely be spam.
