I've read that as well. At one point in time they had the highest level of phDs in the Arab world. I'm not sure where they currently stack up. It's sad that we allow an entire group of people to be wiped out because of such petty tribalism. I remember the oil embargo, the US was at the point of revisiting mideast foreign policy when the Saudis caved, partly in fear of alternative energy source development.

They didn't have to, they chose to, and Israel continues to exploit those divisions.

well even if there were alterative energy sources as there would be, oil will still be needed for such things as plastics and cosmetics....the oil producing countries need to diversify their economies and educate their people....so alterative energy sources may prove to be the catalysts for socio-economic change in the region. The wealth would also be distributed more evenly if the oil declined in significance.
