I meant spoken punjabi.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?
who are those people by the way?
all i know, people just don't care. there isn't enough support to institutionalize it..hence no movement towards teaching it.... its not like there is a thought out opposition in views.
YES STA, it is declining, especially in urban middle and upper classes, at a very fast pace.
From the first day of Pakistan, upper class in Punjab disowned Punjabi and now it reached a level where no one cares for it.

Its spoken in rural areas and Punjabi movies.
Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?
But what about those Punjabi news channels? are not those TV channels enough to promote it?

pretty much. but outside the urban areas, the language is there to stay for a long time still. its just sad that educated class disown it, who could do much more to preserve it.
Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?
The reason being, hindustani or hindi speakers are not anywhere near in prosperity, punjabi society is more of materialistic and hindustani society is more philosophical, we consider them as underdeveloped and they considered us more of unreliable, even I trust biharis in Delhi than punjabis:)
The point is not chinese but their arch rival Japanese, the basic word like electron, atoms, ion etc will remain english because english was always language of science because since beginning english accepted science much faster than other.

I think commercialism also played a part. People like Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi, who is termed as Encyclopedia of rural Punjab (due to portraying life of Punjab in his stories), never written a story of rural Punjab in Punjabi.. Just because urdu books got bigger readership.
Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?
I know Balochi and Pashto are used as medium of education in Balochistan and KPK. I myself studied in Sindhi Medium Schools. Why they don't use Punjabi as a medium in Punjab?
I'm not sure whether Punjabi is taught as a language at school level. Here in Sindh we were taught English, Urdu, Sindhi as well as Arabic languages at school level. Recently they were going to introduce Chines language too :D
In Pakistan, Punjabi is more of a dilect and has no grammar or alphabets (like sindhi has its own), so you can teach punjabi history and literature, but not a language.

Do Chinese speak English or use English as a medium of instructions for science subjects?

But we don't see much Punjabi literature being published after Independence compared to other regional languages literature. They have to develop their alphabets to create new literature. Neither Sindhis can rely on only 'Shah jo Risalo' nor Punjabi on 'Heer Waris Shah', when we talk about latest trends in literature.

from the experience of Sindhi channels, I say they sometimes do dis-service to language by mixing lot of words from other languages, instead of using available vocabulary.
Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?
Not even hindi medium students use anything beyond hindi but fundamental words like I mentioned earlier are always in english, now translating “sodium” in hindi may not be entirely correct, Jews revived Hebrew as language but never ceased to learn english, they have made everything the best, It amazed when I was there the way the are, at the end of world fighting for their existence basing their strength on institution which revived hebrew, made an identity from scratch and still international because they learnt use of english without disowning anything:k:

it surely sounds distasteful.
Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?
Thats my point too. When Hebrew can be revived from scratch, why not rich language like Punjabi (having literature and vocabulary that can be understood by millions) can’t be revived. I think the relevant people lack will to do so.

My point was reviving language and going international as well:)

They revived Hebrew because their scriptures are in Hebrew?
So people of Punjab should learn a lesson to save their language which contains treasures like Heer Waris Shah, Baba Bulleh Shah, Shah Hussai and Sultan Bahoo besides sticking to national language (Urdu) and international language (English)
Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?
i studied Waris Shah’s 2 lines in my grade 8 urdu text book…I guess that counts to something ![]()
as to why is it not taught the answer is we educated punjabi people find it paindoo that is why we dont teach it to our kids.
when u see 2 pathans, or balochis, or sindhis u will see them talking to each other in their native language…but when two punjabis meet, they talk in Urdu ![]()
Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?
I used to force my Punjabi friends to talk with each other in Punjabi, but they hesitated a lot and when I started speaking Sindhi with Sindhi friends in group, my Punjabi friends didn’t like that too ![]()

Having alphabets doesn't really matter much. Even Sindhi & pashto which claim to have their own alphabets are actually being written in arabic script, like european languages are written in roman script, each with some variation of dots or lines. Similarly, putting a few dots or shapes on arabic alphabets doesn't make a new script for Sindhi or Pashto.

It was not my dig on Punjabi, and I did not talk about the script cause for that matter Urdu has same script as Arabic, but Urdu is a diff language with its own rules of grammar.
