Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

I know Balochi and Pashto are used as medium of education in Balochistan and KPK. I myself studied in Sindhi Medium Schools. Why they don’t use Punjabi as a medium in Punjab?

I’m not sure whether Punjabi is taught as a language at school level. Here in Sindh we were taught English, Urdu, Sindhi as well as Arabic languages at school level. Recently they were going to introduce Chines language too

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

I think they do?

Lets see what people from Punjab have to say about this :hmmm:

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

Punjabi is not taught in Punjab, it seems as if the elite of the province was ashamed of their own roots. Go to any big city of Punjab and you will find a very big proportion of people who can't even speak the language. I don't think that Pashto is taught in Kp as well, I could be wrong.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

One of my Pathan friend from Peshawer told that Pashto is the medium of instruction in KP's schools. He himself used to do poetry in Pashto:)

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

I heard they offer Punjabi language at Masters and PhD levels in Universities, but I always think why rich language like Punjabi having poets like Waris Shah and Bulleh Shah not taught at school level?

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

^ the medium of instruction might be Pashto in some schools, but if you search the same in google, by 2010-11 the government was trying to introduce Pashto as a subject in schools, maybe it has been added now.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

Yes in masters and phd its an optional subject, but who would learn it at that level. It's inferiority complex and nothing else. In the schools in which I used to study, students who spoke punjabi were called paindoos which was considered to be a derogatory word. None of my cousins speak punjabi, and that's the case in many families. In a couple of generations I think punjabi would be history.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

By next year kp will be teaching in local languages including Pashto, hindko and kohistani.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

Ali go through this UNESCO report about local languages being used as medium of instructions in Pakistan

UNESCO Office in Bangkok: Pakistan

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

They are not teaching punjabi and I saw in news that from 2013 Chinese language will be added to Nisab.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

Thank you Muqa for opening this thread. I also have same concerns too.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

What are your concerns STA?

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

Chinese would be taught in Sindh, I don't think that would be the case in Punjab.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

I am conflicted about this. Already v r supposed to knw two languages which are not our mother tongue (Urdu/English). And be medium of instruction do you mean all the subjects taught in that language? Cz then it will be very difficult to switch over to English in uni,

Will be looking forward to reading the views on here.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

Yeh zulam sirf sindh pe kyu?

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

I'm of the opinion that basic (Primary) language should be in mother tongue.

As far as difficulty in adopting English is concerned, my personal experience says its not the case, I started studying English form Class Six (from A, B, C), upto class 5, I didn't know even the Alphabets of English. We kept on studying everything in Sindhi including Maths, Physics, Bio, Chemistry, etc till 10th Class. But I didn't get it difficult, when we have to study these subjects in English at college level, because 5 years of Enshlis as a subject and English terminologies in science subjects (that were were studying in Sindhi) had made our base.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

There isn't any demand from the inferiority complexed people of punjab. The ''modern'' or wannabe "modern" people don't speak punjabi at home at all. So, if the kids are not speaking punjabi at home, they won't want it in school either. Its a pity really, punjab is the only province where even the transcript hasn't been finalized.

The punjabis who made greatest contribution to Urdu poetry, did sh!t for their mother tongue. That says a lot about it.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

As far as poetry is concerned, I think Punjabi got good poets. be it traditional poets like Ustad Daman, Tariq Aziz (even Faiz Saheb wrote some Punjabi poems) or filmi poetry. Majority of Pakistani movies were made in Punjabi.

I do agree with you in respect of Transcript and medium of instruction. Even Saraki (as spoken in Sindh) got different transcript.

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

I was talking about the likes of Iqbal, Faiz, Qasmi etc etc. They didn't do .......

Re: Why Punjabi is not taught in Pakistani schools?

Recently, a friend read a book on Iqbal. The book hilights that Iqbal was more tilted towards Central Asian culture and heroes like Mehmood and loved Bukhara, Samarqand, etc more than local heroes and cities. His poetry doesn't include reference to local culture and traditions and inspite of all this he is Pakistan's national poet.

Although, I don't completely agree to this, but this view does contain a weight.
