Re: why isn’t White the dominant Pak bridal color?

Re: why isn’t White the dominant Pak bridal color?

Ah the good old Hindu throw line? Unlike Punjab and Sindh, NWFP/Fata and Baluchistan have historically remained distant from Hindu India, but where do you think they got the ‘red’ from? Or where did Turko-Persian Moguals got the reds and oranges from?

Dude India has more 2,000 different ethnic groups, not all of them follow the same practices and traditions! I know for a fact that there’s certain ethnic group in Indian south where brides wear white and gold or white and red bordered saris. You are seriously disrespecting yourself by giving a simple cultural thing a harmless religious twist. We are the natives of subcontinent, b*****ng every other thing as ‘Hindu’ is not gonna make you all Arab.

Re: why isn't White the dominant Pak bridal color?

Actually white came into vogue in the West after 1840 when Queen Victoria wore it for her wedding. Beforethat a plethora of colors, even red were used.

Re: why isn't White the dominant Pak bridal color?

Not true.

In medieval English poetry and European art, white is often portrayed as a colour of virgin bride. There are certainly references in Geoffrey Chaucer's poetry.

Re: why isn't White the dominant Pak bridal color?

you're right gujurati brides tend to where white saris with a red border and a red dupatta, and south indian christians do a white wedding dress with a gold tiara at times... however i think the color significance thing is a hindu thing because there were certain colors one was told to wear for certain parts of different poojas. those things aren't followed so much now days but i've read up on it and I remember there's a desi shrot story novel and the bride was on a plane from india coming to america. Her mom sent her saris in certain colors and she described what each color meant to her religion which was hindu. at the same time i don't think arab brides always wore white a lot of the royals didn't wear white on their days just beautiful new dresses mostly with gold threading and such on it. but Hinduism is one of the oldest religions and so you have to not get your feelings hurt when you kinda bow down and say culturally certain things from desi culture stems from traditions that were practiced in hinduism. Doesn't make anyone less of a muslim esp when we're just merely discussing colors. I think you are getting a bit angry for nothing.

Hi Jolie and MissN,

I couldn't agree with u more on the fact that not everything Arabic is Islamic...... trust me I should know, I live in Saudi.lol My statement was based on my understanding of what I see, furthermore at the end of the day it is personal choice whether u choose to go with tradition, its not like anyone is holding a gun to ur head to do what they say :)

Re: why isn't White the dominant Pak bridal color?

^ I guess wat the imp thing to remember every1 is that red is the traditional/cultural of brides in Pakistan. Whether it stems from hnduism or not, it really doesnt matter cuz in Islam there is no 'right' or 'wrong' or 'mandatory' colour for brides
So just bcuz arabs wear white on their wedding, doesnt mean South Asian HAVE to or its un-Islamic if they dont

by wearing a certain colour on ur wedding, ur not adding or subtractng anything frm Islam therefore it doesnt matter what colour u wear. its okay to have tradition/culture as long as ur not adding/subtracting from Islamic teachings.

Not all Arabs wear white. Just like not all Hindus/Indians wear red

Re: why isn't White the dominant Pak bridal color?

haha chill mate....i just threw that out there...i wasnt stating any facts.....its just what came to mind =S i wasnt blaming hindu's for anything......its a mix of cultures i guess....there is nothing religous about the colour we wear on our wedding...i think its purely trend and culture..... :D

Agreed sohni!

Re: why isn’t White the dominant Pak bridal color?

It might have been present in earlier times, but Eastern is right in that after Queen Victoria wore white on her wedding day, it became more popular and more dominant as a wedding dress colour. Just like when William gave Kate that sapphire ring, a thousand knock off’s were born, and just like how after April 29th, wedding dress designers will be scrambling to knock off her dress for brides who want to copy her style.

From good ole Wikipedia: White did not become a popular option until 1840, after the marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert of Saxe-Coburg. Victoria had worn a white gown for the event so as to incorporate some lace she owned. The official wedding portrait photograph was widely published, and many other brides opted for a similar dress in honor of the Queen’s choice.

As for why its not dominant in Pakistani culture, why would it be? What is our connection to white? Why isn’t blue a dominant bridal colour or green?
But also, because we did historically used to be part of India and some Indian cultures/sub-cultures do wear white as a funereal colour, perhaps that’s why we shied away from it for brides also, and chose red instead as a more colourful alternative. Or maybe just like we’re trending Bunto brides these days, some popular girl decided to wear red and everyone liked it so much, it got copied over and over and before you know it, its the bridal colour of choice.
