CONSIDERING the fact that both are addicitve..however a sip of alcohol once a week wont addict you, or a glass a week wont addict you, …??
From what I've heard, alcohol is forbidden because it intoxicates you. Smoking, as far as I know, does not.
CONSIDERING the fact that both are addicitve..however a sip of alcohol once a week wont addict you, or a glass a week wont addict you, ......??
They're BOTH detrimental to one's health. However, alcohol impairs your judgment whereas smoking doesn't. This impaired judgment can can ruin relationships (saying and doing things you regret), it can endanger your life and those of others (car accidents, for example), and it can can get you into trouble with the law even (rape, physical violence etc).
At least when one is smoking...they're still in their khosh aur hawas.
Re: why is smoking makruh but alcohol haram?
Why can you smoke and drive. But when you are drunk you can’t?

Smoking is considered Makruh only because most gatherings of scholars can't get unanimity on whether it's haraam or not.
Most scholars lean towards it being haraam, as it is established to be very harmful towards the body, and poisoning yourself is haraam.
However, a minority is reluctant to declare it haraam because nothing that is physically like tobacco is explicitly declarted haraam in the Quran or Sunnah. They feel that in case they get it wrong, they would be sinning by declaring the halal to be haraam, and decide on the side of caution against outright declaring it haraam.
As a compromise position.... all scholars agree it to be makruh.
Re: why is smoking makruh but alcohol haram?
I've heard that they are both haram. As anything that is bad for your health physical/mental (IE addictons) and harms your body is haram... please correct me if I am wrong.
Re: why is smoking makruh but alcohol haram?
you are wrong.
Re: why is smoking makruh but alcohol haram?
even if it is makruh, people are like whatever, let's still indulge ...
you are wrong.
Please explain...
CONSIDERING the fact that both are addicitve..however a sip of alcohol once a week wont addict you, or a glass a week wont addict you, ......??
coz drinking intoxicates you while smoking does not!
as mentioned above drinking and driving is prohibited but smoking and driving is not for a reason..
Re: why is smoking makruh but alcohol haram?
so what about when you are addicted to cigarettes and can't get your hands on one.....what state is your mind in when you are going through withdrawal?
are you still able to make reasonable decisions?
I think not.
This is something that I have a big problem with. All statistics show that smoking is way way way more harmful than alcohol. The amount of people that die from heart disease, cancer, diabetes , and other ailments related to smoking. From the interwebs regarding which is more harmul:
Smoking. It is much more addictive than alcohol and sucks you in to consuming more as you get into the habit. This leads to higher levels of damage to your health. Alcohol is more controllable as long you stay on the right side of the consumption line, and in small amounts some alcohols actually have health benefits.
Given the above, the average smoker has a much higher chance of eventually falling ill because of his habit than the average drinker. Smoking illnesses have more widespread affects in the body, affecting lungs and cardiovascular functions, as well as greatly increasinng the risk of cancer. Drinking diseases can affect liver and brain functions. Chronic alcohol abuse can affect the the metabolism and digestive functions, causing malnutrion and some other resultant side-effects.
About 3.5% of cancer deaths are related to excess drinking. About 20% of cancer deaths are related to smoking.

Not only does smoking affect the smoker but second hand smoke is a terrible thing as well and affects those around you. When I was young, my Dad smoked indiscriminantly around the house and I breathed in that stuff for sure. He eventually passed on from stomach cancer, as well as 3 of his sisters who also had cancer, and one of my cousins as well. Smoking is terrible. I really don’t understand why people in our culture/ religion don’t talk about it more and make it a bigger issue.
coz drinking intoxicates you while smoking does not!
as mentioned above drinking and driving is prohibited but smoking and driving is not for a reason..
So, is it OK to drink enough not to get drunk?
Re: why is smoking makruh but alcohol haram?
One thing you ve all forgot to mention is that ... Like mad scientist said .. i agree .. however, the conclusion to makrooh ..what they agree is of one of the two types ..
the makrooh they agree upon is 'makrooh e tahreemi' and NOT makrooh e tanzeehi...
and thoseof you who have the knowledge of Fiqh in depth .. they will understand that ..if makrooh e tanzeehi is ''REPEATED'' then that action will become Makrooh e tahreemi and so .. similarlyy ..if something is declared makrooh e tahreemi ..then again if ''REPEATED'' then that action ..WILL eventually become 'Haraam''
The confliction of scholars IS that whether to class smoking DIRECTLY / INITIALLY to Haraam or Should it be given the benifit of the doubt and classed as ''Makrooh e Tahreemi'' i.e. Intial stage of smoking is Makrooh e Tahreemi ..so if repeated constantly even if its one fag a day .. your still repeating it ..it WILL eventually be classed HARAAM for THAT particular person who is smoking..
Hope it clears alot of ppls minds as to why its Makrooh. :)
Re: why is smoking makruh but alcohol haram?
^ very interesting information that probably nobody wants to think about.....at least not those that are addicted.....
I understand what you are saying, however, sugar and saturated fat probably kill even more people, we can not declare that as haram.
There is the concept in islam of healthy and recommended stuff, i forget the term, which these fall into as to what is recommended and what is not, and it has less to do with specific items but concepts
Re: why is smoking makruh but alcohol haram?
like i said in my posts, is one sip of alcohol a week or a glass a week ok, surely one glass doesnt intoxicate you....??
Re: why is smoking makruh but alcohol haram?
a lot of our actions are repeated, such as drinking one glass of pepsi on a friday night with my usual fish n chips also on a friday......?
Re: why is smoking makruh but alcohol haram?
^ it is outright prohibited dear sister.
CONSIDERING the fact that both are addicitve..however a sip of alcohol once a week wont addict you, or a glass a week wont addict you, ......??
With addiction, if amount of alcohol is increased, one becomes mentally impaired. With smoking, this does not occur.
As it is mentioned above for some, smoking is haram. So no big difference for some.
Alcohol in small amount has some health benefit but over the long period more damage to body and mind. Depends on the person though.
Alcohol is strongly addictive physically and smoking is also physically addictive but not as much as alcohol.
Alcohol strongly changes the personality or judgement of the person but smoking does not. Or if smoking does, then it is not so obvious.
Both alcohol and smoking are started once a week, and then gradually more often.
We do not know if nicotine was so common in arab areas as addiction. None of other religions specifically mention nicotine being forbidden.
