Why is Pakistan's national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

Re: Why is Pakistan's national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

The music composition was made before lyrics. Hafeez says that he tried to write the anthem in Urdu, but was unsuccessful due to the short lines required to fill the composition. He therefore tried Persian, which usually expresses more thoughts in fewer words than Urdu.
And it worked for him.

Re: Why is Pakistan’s national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

No it is not. Read the origin of Urdu and national anthem. Urdu is a mixture of Persian, Turkish and Arabic languages.

**http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urdu**Birth of Urdu Urdu means “(military) camp” in the Hindustani language, from Turkish ordu meaning “army”; and Urdu language was the language of the camp when Nader Shah of Persia (Iran) invaded India. Nader Shah set up his camp in what is now modern day Pakistan, and from here the Khariboli speaking Indians and the Persian speaking Iranians (Persians) mingled together and a third language, Urdu was born. It is bridge between the two branches of Indo-Iranian language. Today Urdu has adapted a lot of Arabic and Persian words because of many migrants from Iran and the Middle East adapted this language. It is also very welcoming to other international languages; it has adopted certain vocabulary from English.

**The Urdu lyrics, written by Hafeez Jullundhri in 1952, have commonality with Persian, making them understandable in both languages. No verse in the three stanza lyrics is repeated.

Pipe dreams.

sure go ahead catty :D

Re: Why is Pakistan's national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

To make sure no one understood it. I bet 90% of pakistanis have no idea what the meaning is.

That has been the problem with pakistan for a long time. Too much pretentiousness and self-glorification.

Re: Why is Pakistan's national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

Urdu is defined by the words it has from many languages.

This is the beauty of the Urdu Language to accomodate words from many languages just like it was created in past because of people from different areas coming to common area and doing busines or mixing with each others.

Anyone who does not have knowledge of this simple concept does not even have basic requirements to question why national Anthem of Pakistan is worded like it is.

The question is unnecesary and has no value at all.

Re: Why is Pakistan's national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

How many and which words from the anthem are not used in Urdu?

Bad bet my friend, unless you imagine only 10% Pakistanis know Urdu.

Also, please find me a national anthem of any country which does not glorify that country.

Re: Why is Pakistan’s national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

^ knee-jerk nationalism :nono:

go out on any pakistani street and ask random people what kishwar means. you’d find that I was generous with my estimate.

you missed the point completely… the national anthem is by definition self-glorification yet it is meaningless if the general public has no idea of what is being said. and for what purpose? to come across as sophisticated? or to show our persian roots?

Re: Why is Pakistan's national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

Ishwar means God.

Re: Why is Pakistan’s national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

Okay, one word out of the whole thing and you claim that the anthem cannot be understood by 90% of Pakistanis? Most of the names (90% ?) of people in Pakistan (including not rare name 'Kishwar" and “Ghalib”) are actually originally Arabic or Persian words.

It is not the anthem’s fault that people do not make an effort to know what it means. Indian national anthem is in Bengali, a language most of the people there do not speak. What’s wrong with that?

Chacha Ghalib had a lot of work in Persian. Most of Iqbal’s important work is in Persian. We lost a lot of history, philosophy, literature, and even science when we stopped learning Persian. I am actually for promoting the language in Pakistan. What if the language is from the invaders and occupiers from the West? So is English.

A lot of us turn to English to ‘come across as sophisticated’. What’s wrong if someone uses Persian? It is a lovely language anyways.

Re: Why is Pakistan's national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

what's the big deal

Religion in Arabic
Government uses English
National Anthem written in farsi.

We just don't like our national language.

Re: Why is Pakistan's national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

a lot of the words what we say are urdu, were farsi before. probably more than 80% of the words in our current national anthem are frequently used in urdu poetry. lets not make an issue where there is not any... media just needs something controversial to talk about all the time, anyway its a kind of fashion these days to discredit and bad mouth every single thing related to our country.

as someone once said, don’t fix it, it’s not broken

Re: Why is Pakistan’s national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

Funny, your comment reminded me of an ‘esteemed’ column writer, Kishwar Naheed. Here’s a link to one of her columns advocating use of “PURE” Urdu language in official business, media and schools:

http://www.jang.com.pk/jang/jan2011-daily/07-01-2011/editorial/col3.gif

From her first six lines, I can find several English words: Media, Web Site, Anchorperson, Interview, Screen, Radio, TV, Channel, Biscuit, Dance, … and the list goes on.

I am not demeaning her effort. Just trying to say that Urdu language has adopted all those English words. Similarly, Urdu language has adopted all the words used in our national anthem and you cannot really say it is not Urdu.

Re: Why is Pakistan's national anthem in farsi (Persian language)?

I asked one of my class fellow who is from afghanistan to read pak anthem anr tell me what it means .. he tried to read it he said this not 100 percnt farsi he said fifty percent of the words are persian other he dont understand. And also the structure is not persian , he said

:smack:

Yaar you argue for no reason and show hatred whenever you can.

Just go around any country and ask randomly to even recite the national anthem of his/her country. You will not find many who can even recite the whole national anthem let alone know the meaning of many words used in it.

You proved nothing by bringing this example of kishwar word not being understood by a random Pakistani.
