I know several people who were made a moderator but later became a common member.
Why does GupShup do it? Is this because of some in-house politics and fights among moderators? Or is it that people are made moderator on temporary basis?
Usually at other forums, becoming moderator is a one-way street. But not here on GupShup.
Re: Why is "modship" taken away from some members?
Moderators are not appointed for life.
We appreciate their contributions for as long as they can work with us and contribute to this community.
There are times when moderators have other commitments that prevent them from volunteering their time in this role or times when they decide that they are unable to fulfill the responsibilities they are entrusted with. In these instances we have no choice but to replace them with someone that can help us.
As always we are grateful for any generous contribution of time and effort and encourage these veterans to remain as members of the community.
Re: Why is "modship" taken away from some members?
This may be off topic, but can anyone tell (President may be) how do you choose your moderators? They volunteer? They need to be at a certain membership level (senior?) etc?
Re: Why is "modship" taken away from some members?
There are no hard and fast rules regarding the procedure.....as you can imagine we are forced to adapt our selection techniques depending on the currently active members and the needs/goals of the board.
We do prefer that they have seniority but we have been known to offer the role to new members provided they fit other criteria that may be particularly required for a specific area.

As Muzna said, they dont need to be at a certain membership level, but for most of the part, level of activity over a longer period of time is a qualifier. That means that keeping everything same, I would pick a person who is actively posting from last many months but may have only 2000 post, vs someone who joined 3 months ago and hit 3000 posts.
As for the process goes, here is how bring a person in.
Our first choice is to pick a person from existing team (so if we need a mod for Cafe, we look for one within mod team). If we need to bring a person from outside, then Channel Manager of that forum looks for people from members and identify 1 or 2 and then starts a thread in CM forum. Every proposed name needs to get 3 yeses and 0 Noes (even 1 no supersedes all the yeses). Once it gets 3 yeses then the CM sends out a PM to the that member and offers him/her moderator ship.
As far as Mods leaving the team is concerned, 95% of them resign because of the facts that Muzna mentioned. Only maybe in 5% cases where admins take the decision that the team is better off without this or that mod.
