When I read posts about her on Pinkvilla she seems to attract a lot more negativity than other Indian actresses.. I know she has said some ‘controversial’ things.. is this the main reason or do people think she doesn’t deserve to be famous because she’s not as good an actress as the Bollywood stars or not considered as attractive?

she is average looking....and acting wise...well she has yet to give a good performance.
as for why she isnot popular in india...well there is no solid proof whether she is famous or isnot famous in bollywood....and this should not be an issue either since we have many actors in bolly who are not famous.

Pinto, who starred as Latika, the girl for whose love Jamal risks his life and appears on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, is now the highest paid actress in India.
Until the release of Slumdog Millionaire, Pinto was unknown both in her native India and Hollywood. But since the film swept last month’s Oscars, she has landed a series of lucrative roles in films being shot by a number of top directors, including Woody Allen and Julian Schnabel. According to sources close to the star she has now overtaken top Bollywood stars Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, who recently starred with Steve Martin in Pink Panther 2.
**Her earnings have now topped £2 million, they said. “Freida can’t be compared to Aishwarya, because we’re not pitching her as an Indian girl in international films. Freida is a true global face,” said Anirban Das, CEO of her management company. "Freida is fast reaching top status in the international arena. The actress’s projects with big film-makers like Woody Allen have helped her join a league which no other Indian actress has achieved so far," said a film analyst.

Does she get offered many Bollywood movies? You don't really hear much about it the way you hear 'Sonam took the part that Priyanka turned down' or whatever :D
Daily Telegrah article makes no sense, how is Freida a Bollywood highest earner when she's done no project in Bollywood, neither she's considered a 'Bollywood' actress to begin with? Bollywood is not her main source of income or is it, but it is for Ash, hence she's rightly holds the title of highest paid *Bollywood actress *(last time I checked) I'm sure she's now replaced by likes of Kareena or something.
In Hollywood, Freida is probably the highest paid *Indian *actress and that's obvious since Aish hasn't been in a Hollywood project for a long time, and the films she'd done weren't considered box office hits to raise her price and top of all that, she's has no future Hollywood project coming up. So it makes sense for Freida to top the chart since she also gets paid in dollars.
Besides, why do people make a such a big deal about Bollywood not casting her? Could be also the fact Freida herself has no interest in working in Bollywood, I certainly don't see her as person who's has any serious interest in doing Bollwood projects. And why would you wanna do Shiela ki Janwani type crap in B'wood when you have the chance to work with likes of Woody Allen?
